UNS — The UPT Library of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a training program to improve library competencies. In this activity, UNS Library collaborated with the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS. This training took place from 26 to 27 June 2023 at Room IE202 Building E FKIP UNS, and continued online through the Zoom platform from 3 to 7 July 2023.
The training program on library competency enhancement was attended by 87 second-semester students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program FKIP UNS. The objective of this program was to provide knowledge and skills to students in understanding the technical aspects of library management, utilizing the latest technological developments, and preparing them to become 21st-century teachers.
On the opening day of the training, the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si. delivered a speech. In his remarks, Dr. Mardiyana discussed the concept of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM). He expressed his hope that the MKBM program would improve the quality of education and provide students with opportunities to develop relevant skills in their respective fields of interest.
Dr. Raheni Suhita, M.Hum., the Head of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, FKIP UNS, provided encouragement and motivation to the students to actively participate in the training and acquire library management competencies. “I hope that all Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program students can actively participate in this library competency improvement training until its completion and benefit from the knowledge gained,” Dr. Raheni explained.
Dr. Edy Suryanto, M.Pd. as the Head Organizer of the training, explained that the purpose of the program was to equip students with competencies and improve their abilities in carrying out library management and school library operations. Therefore, the competency training had a positive impact on all students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program FKIP UNS.
Erland Cahyo Saputro, S.Sos., M.Hum. delivered a presentation on “School Libraries in the Perspective of 21st Century Teachers”. During the material presentation, Erland Cahyo Saputra, S.Sos., emphasized the importance of library management in schools, especially at the elementary school (SD) level. “Currently, there are still several schools with highly concerning library conditions,” Erland Cahyo Saputro said.

Erland Cahyo Saputro provided examples of school library conditions, such as one elementary school where the library is combined with or integrated with the health service unit (UKS).
From the second day to the fifth day, the training was conducted online via Zoom, with speakers from the UNS Library. Each day featured three to four speakers. On the second day, Bambang Hermanto, S.Pd., M.Pd. discussed library management, while Sri Anawati, S.Sos., M.Hum. focused on library collection development. Dinar Puspita Dewi, S.Sos., delivered cataloging (theory and practice).
On the third day, Haryanto, S.IP., M.IP. presented the practical aspect of digital library automation, followed by Ahmad Nur Rais, S. IP. M.IP. Subsequently, Muhammad Solihin, S. IP., M.IP. discussed subject classification theory and practice, and Daryono addressed library service topics. Henny Perwitosari, S.I.Pust. talked about user guidance and promotion.
On the fourth day, Daryono, S.Sos., M.IP. spoke about library service topics, while Sri Utari, S.E., M.A. focused on reference services and information retrieval. Dr. Raheni Suhita, M. Hum. presented strategies and material development for listening comprehension.
Finally, on the fifth day, Titi Setyoningsih, S.Pd., M.Pd. explained strategies and material development for speaking. Ari Suryawati Secio Chaesar, S.Pd., M.Pd. discussed strategies and material development for reading, and Dr. Chafit Ulya, S.Pd., M.Pd. provided strategies and material development for writing.
