UNS – In order to introduce Indonesian culture, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta collaborates with Airlangga University (UNAIR) collaborated to hold the 2018 Indonesian Heritage Course (INHERIT) program (2-15/7/2018) for foreign students. They are taught to recognize herbal medicine and batik through short course for two weeks in Surabaya and Surakarta.
This activity was attended by 14 students from various countries, most of them are foreign students from UNS and UNAIR as well as some students from several universities in Surabaya. The fourteen students are Fiorella Geraldine (Peru), Seheno Arson Dolly (Madagascar), Li Wen Lin (China), Maria Madalena De Jeus Soares (Timor Leste), Rokayah Luebaesa (Thailand), Kuhafessah Rongso (Thailand), Khaled Nour Aldeen (Syria), Mohammed Hudayberdiyev (Turkmenistan), Azad Hind Gulshan Nanda (India), Burwan Tilusubya (Tanzania), Silas O. Emovwodo (Nigeria), Takanobu Shiina (Japan), Cuthberth N. Mlosa (Tanzania), and Robbert Trice (United States of America).
The second agenda was held at Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) of UNS. They were invited to explore more about local wisdom of Indonesia as well as values ​​and philosophy of batik in depth. To further explore the variety of batik, they were also visited Danarhadi Museum, Pandono abstract batik craftsmen, and stay overnight in the Village Pilang, Sragen to witness the uniqueness of the process of batik making that is still very traditional.
“We hold IN-HERIT for the first time. In this activity we want to introduce local culture in Indonesia, one of them in is batik in Solo. We hope that later when they return to their country they will promote the skills and also knowledge about batik they have learned here,” Â Head of International Office UNS Taufik Al Makmun said.
Those foreign students who follow this activity will also get 4 semester credits in their lectures. In addition to understanding about batik, the participants also learn to make their own batik which will be displayed in a mini-exhibition at the end of the activity.
Previously, on the first agenda they have done some activities at the University of Airlangga in the form of short courses about the manufacture of traditional herbal medicine indigenous Indonesia as well as sour turmeric and wedang pokak. In addition, they also learnt the traditional Javanese and Balinese massage techniques as well as learn combined their own massage equipment such as scrubs of natural ingredients along with professional practitioners.
