UNS — Commission III of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Board of Professors held a National Seminar on “Astha Brata Leadership to Welcome 2045 Golden Generation 2045” through the Zoom Cloud Meeting on Tuesday (28/9/2021). The National Seminar led by Prof. Dr. Sariyatun, M.Pd., aims to re-examine the Astha Brata leadership model as the basis of characters and manners in developing future leadership models.
In the press release that was held in PUI Javanologi UNS, Monday (27/9/2021), the Chairman of Commission III DP UNS, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., stated that the solution for ideal leadership post-Covid-19 is an exciting topic besides the health, economy, and mental/spiritual issues. A leader is in the central role that determines the direction, shape, and sustainability of a nation in the new normal era.
Astha Brata s eight (astha, esthi) teaching (brata, dharma) is well known in Java and Indonesia as excellent leadership values. Astha Brata (Hastha Brata) has three sources, first. Serat Rama Jarwa (from Yasadipura), Pupuh Pangkur stanza 16 to 35. The teaching said that a leader should have the characters of eight Gods: Indra, Surya, Bayu, Kuwera, Baruna, Yama, Candra, and Brama. Second, Serat Aji Pamasa (from R.Ng. Ranggawarsita), which taught that a leader needs to perform dharma 8 elements of the earth: pratala ‘soil’, Tirta ‘water’, Dahana ‘fire’, maruta ‘wind’, Surya ‘sun’, Candra ‘moon’, Sudama ‘stars’, and Mendhung ‘clouds’. Thirds, Pewayangan, in Makutharama (Rama Wijaya) play, Begawan Kesawawidhi (Sri Kresna) advice to Arjuna. A leader should follow the characters of sun, moon, stars, cloud, wind, fire, sea, and soil.
The invited speakers in this national conference are Dr. Emil Elestianto Dardak (Vice-Governor of East Java) with material on Leadership on Millennial’s Perspective, Prof. Dr. Zudan Arif Fakrulloh (Director General of Population and Civil Registry RI) with material on National Leadership to Welcome the 2045 Golden Generation, Sarwoto Atmosutarno (Chairman MTI) with material on Astha Brata Leadership Actualization, and Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D. (Chairman Commission III DP UNS) with material on Looking for Future Leader. “The Chairman of Board of Professor UNS, Prof. Drs. Suranto, M.Sc. Ph.D., will deliver an opening remark, and the seminar will be officially opened by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., with Prof. Diah Kristina, M.A. Ph.D., will act as the moderator,” Prof. Sahid explained.
The seminar will be participated by university students from undergraduate to the doctoral degree, university teachers, professors, civil servants, and the general public. The National Seminar is expected to provide knowledge and stimulus for participants’ creativity, innovation, logical reasoning, feeling, and attitude. Besides, proposing a framework for an ideal leader for the community. Prof. Sahid hoped that the re-examination of Astha Brata would benefit the nation. Humas UNS
