UNS — Proud achievement was again accomplished by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students. Three UNS students, Rizal Galih Pradana from Psychology Program 2018, Sekar Khoiri Nismara from Civil Engineering Program 2019, and Steven Leonard from Medicine Education Program 2019, won Amoeba 2021 National Debate held to commemorate the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW). Rizal also won the Best Speaker Award in the same competition.

The competition was held by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the Center for Indonesian Medical Student Activities (CIMSA) Indonesia, World Health Organization (WHO) Indonesia, and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Indonesia, fully online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting. The team went through various rounds of competition to win, starting from the administrative selection that required at least two students from the Faculty of Medical Science (FK), followed by three rounds of selection stage. The Best Four went to the semifinals that determined the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners. The Best Speaker was selected through the total scores of each speaker.

The competition under “The Wise Use of Antimicrobial in Controlling Resistance towards Antimicrobial on Animal Health” as a theme runs for three days on Friday – Sunday (19-21/11/2021). The result of the competition was announced in the closing ceremony on Wednesday (24/11/2021). The team was supervised by Wuji Anggraini, S.S., M.Pd., who is also the supervisor for Student English Forum (SEF) UNS.

Rizal said that he was delighted and grateful for the accomplishment in the prestigious competition. The most surprising result, according to him, was when his team won 7-0 in the grand final and to be announced as Best Speaker. “Because we were only focusing in each stage and did not really think about being the champion, not to mention the Best Speaker,” he said to uns.ac.id team.

Their struggle to be the champion was not all happy and smooth. Rizal stated that he was not fully healthy during the competition and that they met with many strong teams. “Alhamdulillah, Sekar and Steven helped a lot,” he said.

In the future, he hoped that he could be motivated to develop his debating skill and share his experience around debating with other people. He also hoped that his team could win other competitions. “And to comprehend better on the resistance towards antimicrobial to share the information to other young people,” he concluded.
