College students as the agent of community changes are demanded to communicate and to contribute actively in the society based on their own field of studies. Due to this point, three students involving in Students’ Creativity Program Team (PKM) gave the community service through Batik, namely M. Rudianto, Lathifatun Dzatun Nuha, and Arfi’ Rosyidah. Those three students conducted Mental Hospital’s Patients Empowerment through “Ti-Tik” tie-dye mix Batik training applied in pattern making through fabric or T-shirt.

Ti-Tik Training for ex-patients of Mental Hospital Surakarta.

“Ti-Tik” or tie-dye mix batik is two different kinds of batik method. Tie-dye is used to create both patterns and writings through fabric or T-shirt which are later combined into one. This is considered to be a new dying technique,” M. Rudianto said as the Chairman of Students’ Creativity Program.

This training was held every Thursday started from March 24, 2016 and ended on May 30, 2016 in which there were 15 up to 20 participants in each meeting. The participants came from Solo, Ponorogo. Purwodadi and the surrounding area where Batik production centers are located. The training aimed in preparing ex-patients who had finished their rehabilitation to go back to the society.

The participants’ abilities were seen to be developed during the training, however, it did not directly affect their psychological aspect. The event which was conducted by Rudi’s team has helped the participants in recalling their memory about Batik companies where they used to work. Besides, it helped them to socialize with the trainers and other participants. The participants who had joined the training for 2 to 3 meetings was able to teach others participants who joined just now.

Rudi’s team divided the activities into three parts: tutorial, training, and assistance. Tutorial is the emotional approach within the participants in which they were stimulated to recall their memories about Batik before sending them back in the society. Practical training means that the ex-patients need to produce batik in form of varied products. This products further are assisted in marketing stage. Rudi also explained the challenges found by Students’ Creativity Program Team were when they had to manage the participants’ requests. Sometimes, they also had to handle the ignorant participants. The income of the products selling was allocated to the seller, training development and the tools needed.

“This event is essential to encourage the students’ initiative to conduct the similar program aimed at community service,” said Tiwi Bina Affanti, the advisor of the team.

By conducting this “Ti-Tik” training, hopefully it can be the best way to spend the spare time and to train the entrepreneurship skill. The ex-patients who have been able to communicate and to interact properly are going to have a comprehensive training from the production to marketing process. [denty.red.uns.ac.id]
