UNS — The Urban-Rural Design and Conservation Laboratory (URDC) Laboratory of the Architectural Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held seminar dissemination. This event was held in collaboration with the Japanese Study Center (PSJ) Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS. This dissemination was held on Sunday (4/7/2021) with Metal Hamlet, RW 01, Mojo Village, Pasar Kliwon SubDistrict, Surakata online and offline.
The offline event was held with limited participants under strict health protocols and was attended by five selected local communities, a representative from Arkom Solo, and PSJ. The online event was attended by Architectural Engineering Program UNS students and several faculty members in URDC Labo Research Group.
The Chief of URDC Laboratory, Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah N. H., stated that this event recommends the development of healthy housing in Metal Hamlet RW 01, Mojo Village implemented on February – July 2021 through the Machizukuri method approach. According to Professor Masato Kamawamukai, Machizukuri combines construction activities with community-based activities that aim to fix the surrounding environment. “Specifically (this term) refers to various actions that involve the local community and local government who work together to make a more habitable living and working spaces. Therefore, people in Metal Hamlet were involved since the beginning from the data collection process, people aspiration, and after-occupancy evaluation,” Dr. Eng Kusumaningdyah explained.
Besides involving students in the Rural Urban course of Architectural Engineering Program UNS and the member of RG URDC Labo, Arsitektur Komunitas (Arkom) (Community Architecture) Solo also participated in the event. Arkom Solo is a network of Indonesian Arkom Foundation (YAI) active in organizing community through architectural fields. Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah stated that Arkom Solo greatly helps in creating community involvement in the program. Arkom Solo acts as a facilitator that bridges the academicians and the community since, due to the pandemic, students cannot attend the program offline. “Arkom Solo is bridging and facilitate this communication process,” the PSJ Chief explained.
The local community was involved through several Focus Group Discussion (FGD): 5 May 2021 to collect data and explore community needs and activities and 4 July 2021 to provide design recommendations for healthy housing to the local community. The design was prepared by a team of faculty members, students, PSJ, and Arkom Solo, who explores and recommend designs for the exterior and interior of the housing. Four houses were selected as examples. “The house of Pak Jono, Pak Eko, Pak Agus, and Ibu Rini,” Dr. Eng Kusumaningdyah stated.
The Chief of PSJ also explained the characteristics of a healthy house, such as enough lighting, enough air circulation, and interior maximize and adjusted to the owner’s jobs. One of the example houses, Ibu Rini’s, who work as a hijab seller, needs a spacious room to work. Therefore, the interior design was adjusted. During the productive hours, the room serves as a working area, and at night the room serves as a bedroom.
Machizukuri focuses on people’s voices. Therefore, communication was held closely. “Amid the pandemic, the design was communicated using the existing applications, such as zoom to discuss with people,” Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah concluded. Humas UNS
