UNS — Students from Interior Design Program (DI) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta successfully created artificial natural stone ceramic types terrazzo from fly ash waste from coal-burning process. The product development process of the product was funded by Kemdikbudristek funding through the Student Creativity Program-Creative Works (PKM-KC) 2021.

The Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) UNS team that created this innovative product consists of Muhammad Amiruddin Alamsyah, Zilzal Ananta Mustofa, Ahmad Muhsin, Adinda Trisyandita, and Finanda Puspita Sari, and was supervised FSRD faculty member, Ambar Mulyono S.Sn.,M.T., Ph.D.

Muhammad Amiruddin explained that the idea to utilize fly ash was submitted to the PKM-KC Program from Kemdikbudristek under a proposal titled “Utilizing Fly Ash Waste as Decorative Concrete Material”.

The idea was inspired by the absence of a representative solid waste processing site or solid waste storage in Central Java, especially for coal waste. Therefore, their product is expected to be a solution for environmental issues in Indonesia.

“Besides that, we want to create a creative process innovation to utilize coal wastes by processed it into a value-added product that has artistic aesthetic value,” Amir-his nickname- explained.

Utilizing the Fly Ash Waste, FSRD UNS Student Created Artificial Natural Stone Ceramics

He added that this ceramic has a dalmatian pattern and employed a new slicing method that has never been used in creating artificial natural stones. The slicing method is selected for its benefits.

“The final pattern is more diverse and not monotonous compared to ceramic production using cold press method. The coal waste was used to create the dark motifs in this new product,” Amir added.

The resulting ceramic can be installed as alternative products for the construction finishing process for flooring and walls. Amir and the team also hoped that their idea also contributed to enriching the literature in waste processing and innovative products development. Humas UNS
