UNS – Waste issues cannot be ignored. Indonesia is listed as a country with the 2nd largest waste in the world. In order to overcome this, the team of Student Community Service (KKN) from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, took a concrete step by conducting an event to clean the Bimo beach, in Bimorejo village, Wongsorejo Sub-district, Banyuwangi.
This activity was conducted considering that Bimo beach is an estuary, which made the location filled with garbage and rubbish carried by the river currents. With the waste pilled, the KKN team initiates to clean the location to get rid of the waste.
The UNS KKN team together with the village officials cooperate to clean the Bimo beach and restore its beautiful scenery. By using the trash bags and gunny bag, they collect the garbage and rubbish. They also use latex gloves to make it easier to pick up trash and reduce the risk of bacteria present in the garbage. They lined up parallelly to swipe the shoreline, as a form of efficiency to clean the beach.
During their cleaning, they found various types of garbage, mostly organic waste such as dry twigs and scrap wood. There was also residual waste such as diapers and scrap cloth.
With the activity, the KKN UNS team hopes that in the future there will be waste management. “We hope that after this there will be a sustainable follow-up for the beach clean-up in Bimo beach, thus there will be a waste processing unit and the garbage is not only pilled in landfill,” said Dwi Putri Jeng Ivo, one of the team member of UNS KKN who participated in beach clean-up activities to uns.ac.id, Thursday (20/02/2020).
