UNS — The Regional Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, hosted the International Conference of Local Wisdom (Incolwis) 2022. The conference takes place over three days, on 23-25 September 2022, at the Novotel Hotel, Solo.

This international conference presents five speakers as invited speakers. The five speakers were Prof. Suwardi Endraswara from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta; Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo from UNS; Prof. Bern Arp of Leiden University, Netherlands; Prof. Edwin P. Wieringa from Zuu Koln University, Germany; and Dr. Charley Sullivan from the University of Michigan, USA.

In the conference opening ceremony that took place on Friday (23/9/2022), the Managing Committee Chairman of Incolwis, Dr. Suyatno, explained that participants of this conference came from various provinces in Indonesia. He hoped Indonesia could establish a national education system law incorporating regional culture and literature to strengthen the roots of Indonesian nationalism.

Meanwhile, the Dean of FP UNS, Prof. Warto, said that the topics discussed were fundamental in the era of a global transformation. “The local culture response to these changes is an interesting topic for further study, both Javanese, Sundanese, and many others. I, representing the Rector of UNS, welcomed this event. Hopefully, this activity can bring fresh ideas and concrete contributions to solving existing problems,” he hoped.

Meanwhile, the opening speech from the Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, was delivered by the Secretary of the Surakarta City Culture and Tourism Office, Rini Kusumandari, SH, M.M., stating that this conference brought the spirit of diversity, which can strengthen Indonesian society.

“This event is extraordinary because it discusses local culture. We all play a role in maintaining regional culture and local wisdom because it can be an ingredient in building character. I hope that, with technological advances, we can develop and preserve local cultures together,” she concluded. Humas UNS
