UNS – the Center for Science and Technology Excellence (PUI), Center for Fintech and Banking together with the Doctoral Program of Economics (PDIE) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an online class titled International Guest Lecture, on Tuesday (19/5/2020). The event was held through Zoom Meeting and attended by around 200 participants from various universities and research institutes in Indonesia and discussing two themes: the Covid-19 and Finance and Research Publication in Top Tier Journal.

Prof. John W. Goodell from the University of Akron, United State of America is a professor in finance and the Editor in Chief of Elsevier’s Research in International Business and Finance (RIBAF) was invited as a speaker. Recently, Prof. Goodell published a paper on Covid-19 and Finance: Agendas for Future Research.

Opening the lecture in the first online class session, Prof. Goodell explained the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on all sectors, one of which is finance and banking. The possible disruptions are vulnerable banks including bank run, non-performing loan and other impacts. The financial market and microeconomic industries also reacted to the uncertainty with many economic activities undergo practical changes to adjust to the condition. At the same time, Prof Goodell considered that the current condition provides a new opportunity in the field of education and research. the opportunities to develop science are widely open in these two sectors. There are broad topics for researches on Covid-19 and its impact on the economy. The session was concluded with a questions and answers section in which the participants showed their high enthusiasm with a two-way discussion.

The second session discussed the process and how to increase publication opportunities in top tier journals in finance specifically from the editor’s point of view. Prof. Goodell explained the importance of selecting an interesting topic which will ignite other people’s enthusiasm to read and cite the journal or paper. It is also important to pay attention to the technical aspect in preparing the manuscript, the quality of language, cover letter, keywords selection, research contribution, and explanation of the method. Prof. Goodell also informed the participants that the high tier journals have started to consider the diversity of writer’s origin, which provides a good opportunity for papers from developing countries to display their quality.
