UNS – The students of Work Health Diploma (D-4) Program (K3) Vocational School (SV) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducted socialization on flood disaster preparedness in Kampung Sewu, Jebres, Surakarta. the program was managed by Rizka Lailatul Rohmah on Thursday (30/7/2020) through the dissemination of posters and education on flood management while implementing health protocols.

The Bengawan Solo Riverbanks are vulnerable to floods during the rainy season, which motivates Rizka to promote Surakarta Flood Management (Sura FM) community and initiated early education to the community. Even though currently Indonesia is in the dry season, prevention and anticipation are important to minimize losses caused by floods. Disaster risks might increase when the danger and vulnerability level is high. This risk can be minimized by increasing the capacity of resources, such as through education on flood disaster management.

Sura FM is a means to introduce the community to flood disaster management. Currently, Sura FM also active in conducting education through social media in @sura_fm Instagram account which targeted the young generation. Rizka explained that flood management can be implemented through several stages, preparation, mitigation, preparedness, and rehabilitation. During the preparation, the community needs to understand what is considered as flood and its impact, how to perform rescue operation, the evacuation route, and what to be prepared when disaster hits. Mitigation can be implemented by improving physical development or education to improve community ability in facing a disaster. Mitigation is also an action performed to reduce the risk of disaster. In preparedness, a community needs to understand steps to be done and steps that need to be avoided when flood hits. The last stage is rehabilitation or recovery which includes immediate and long-term repairs, economic recovery, psychological recovery for flood victims, and housing construction. Rizka hopes that the community can perform more than a preparation stage. Humas UNS
