Basically, every individual have their own way of thinking about the concepts of abstractness achieved by the different level of learning. The concept underlying this program is that the children learn by using the concrete things as the media. Based on the observation, most of elementary teachers in sub-district Jaten and Colomadu did not use any instructional media to enhance the learning. It is caused by several factors, they are: (1) Most of the elementary students in sub-district Jaten and Colomadu learn better when their teacher uses only verbalized formal talk in teaching, (2) Lack of instructional media used in teaching Mathematics, (3) Lack of knowledge in using the simple instructional media which is beneficial in teaching, (4) The teachers have no experience in designing their own instructional media based on their materials, (5) Lack of knowledge in selecting and designing the simple educative instructional media. Thus, the program is conducted to solve those problems in order to create the active, creative, and innovative learning process using various instructional media.
The training which is held every Saturday is carried out in Teacher Work Group (KKG) for 50 elementary teachers. This program aims to motivate and to give the teachers knowledge and comprehension about how to make the instructional media for teaching Mathematics. Moreover, the target of this program related to teach Mathematics are making several instructional media such as, (1) Nomograph and Numbered Ruler, which help the students in addition and subtraction integers material, (2) Numbered Balance, Cuisenaire, and Fraction Card, which help the students in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division material, (3) Abacus Seeds and Number Card, which helps the students in place value and decimal fraction, (4) Number Board, which helps the students in KPK and FPB material, (5) Percentage Board, which help the students in calculating the percentage.
The methods given in the program training is by giving the assistance in identifying the name and the function of several instructional media. This method is mainly to acquaint the trainees with the concepts of those media in teaching Mathematics. Then there was a dicussion session for the trainees who have not fully understand about the previous material and then they are guided to use the instructional media properly. The final step is by assigning a task for the trainees to make their own instructional media based on the assistance and instruction given previously.
The program involving 57 elementary schools and 6 lecturers has generated the development of the trainees’ knowledge, skill, and comprehension related to various instructional media used in teaching Mathematics. Moreover, they are able to create the media by themselves based on the trainers’ assisstance during the program. In sum up, the team of Knowledge and Science for Society (IbM) concluded that this program is supposed to be a sustainable program since the trainees show the high interest to fully involve during the training.
