UNS – The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic becomes a heavy challenge in implementing the values of Pancasila in social life. In the crisis, the spirit of gotong-royong (mutual cooperation), tolerance, and harmony get vulnerable.
Based on this condition, the Institute of Educational Quality Assurance and Development (Lembaga Pengembangan dan Penjaminan Mutu Pendidikan – LPPMP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on ‘Description and Implementation of the Values of Pancasila in the Covid-19 Pandemic’ on Wednesday (3/6/2020) to review Pancasila in deep from various perspectives, historical, legal, and educational.
LPPMP UNS invited three main speakers, Prof. Sapriya the Secretary of Central Pancasila and Citizenship Education Professional association, Prof. Hermanu, the chief of Pancasila Implementation Study Center (Pusat Studi Pengamalan Pancasila – PSP) LPPM UNS, and Dr. Hassan Suryono, the chief of Pioneering Study Center for Terrorism and Radicalism LPPM UNS.
The webinar was opened by the Chief of LPPMP, Prof. Nunuk Suryani. In her remark, Prof. Nunuk stated that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a various crisis for Indonesia.
“The background of the crisis is widespread of Covid-19 in Indonesia and globally with no clear indication of the end. The Covid-19 pandemic causes a deep crisis for Indonesian people, health, psychological, social, and economic crisis,” Prof. Nunuk stated.
Further, Prof. Nunuk stated that if Indonesia manages to free itself from the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia will manage to prove itself as a country with strong unity and solidarity, starting from its government to the lowest level of the community.
After an opening remark from Prof. Nunuk, Prof. Hermanu delivered his speech entitled ‘Pancasila: In Historical Perspectives and Globalization Challenges’. He stated that Pancasila as the ‘weltanschauung’ and ‘philosophische grondslag’ has not become the national and stated paradigm in facing the global changes.
Further, he stated that the formation of Pancasila is Indonesia’s post-independence ‘doctrine of state’, thus, the government and citizen behavior must stand on the values contained in Pancasila.
The values in Pancasila mentioned by Prof. Hermanu is further explained by the speech from Dr. Hassan Suryono. On occasion, he mentioned the nine fundamental values of Pancasila from a legal perspective.
“The fundamental value of Pancasila becomes the legal system and implementation during the Covid-19 is the fundamental values of Pancasila, ethical norms, legal norms, the legal system, social life, national life, international life, and prevention of vertical and horizontal social disharmony,” Dr. Hassan explained.
As the Chief of Pioneering Study Center for Terrorism and Radicalism LPPM UNS, Dr. Hassan stated that during March to April 2020 he had conducted an online survey on national identity which at the least has a contribution on the unity of Indonesia. National identity has the largest role in uniting Indonesia.
At the end of the speech, Prof. Sapriya presented his speech on ‘The Implementation of Pancasila Values in the Covid-19 Pandemic: The Citizenship Education Perspective’.
“The problems in Covid-19 era such as the disruption in the economic growth, the obstacle to the education process, less conducive condition for education, lack of synergy between national and local government, and the compliance to the new normal,” Prof. Sapriya conveyed.
Concluding his speech, he stated that there are teacher’s characteristics that in line with the values of Pancasila. For example, teachers who are willing and smart in building network and communication, teachers who are patient and don’t give up easily, teachers who work hard, teachers who always pray for their students, teachers who can be role models, and teachers who are sincere.
