UNS – Commemorating the Environmental Day, which falls every June 5th, the Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta initiates one day without emission. This is in accordance with the Circular Number 38/UN27/SE/2020 regarding the ‘UNS Clean Air Movement, One Day Emission Free in UNS’ dated 2 June 2020.
Theissuance of the Circular is based on Rector’s Regulation Number 827A/UN27/KP/2013 Regarding the Guidelines of Environmental-Friendly Management in UNS Campus and Rector’s Instruction Number 6 of 2016 on Environmentally Friendly Transportation in UNS.
The UNS Clean Air Movement was started by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho together with the Vice Rectors, Chairman of the Senate, Head of Faculty and Institutions, who were cycling around UNS campus, which started on 06.30 WIB from the UNS Rector’s Official Residence, while implementing the health protocol.
“Thus, the motor vehicles of the UNS academics member should be parked at Rector’s Official Residence, LPPM UNS Parking lot, or SPMB UNS parking lot, and continue their trip to their work office by campus bus, walking, or cycling. This includes all the chief, who can use a bicycle when entering the UNS Kentingan campus area,” explains Prof. Jamal to uns.ac.id while resting at UNS Lake.
Besides avoiding motor vehicles, on Friday (5/6/2020), the UNS academic members are also prohibited to turn on their air-conditioning (AC) system starting from 07.30 until 12.00 WIB. “Thus, AC should be turned off, the window in our office can be opened. This activity also aims to increase the academic members’ awareness of the importance of reducing air pollution in the UNS campus area,” adds Prof. Jamal.
Prof. Jamal also adds that the movement will be held continuously every year in order to commemorate Environmental Day. However, it is also possible for it to be implemented once a week or once a month. “So, we will discuss this matter with the other chief, whether this activity should be implemented once a month or once a week for every Friday, considering that this activity can be an added-value in UI GreenMetric assessment,” he adds.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science UNS, Prof. Reviono welcomed this activity. Prof. Reviono hopes that an activity like this can be held continuously to reduce air pollution. “Cycling is good for the lungs and heart; thus, this activity needs to be held continuously. Therefore, further discussion is needed, hence, this movement will not only be carried out once a year but can be held for once a month or week, to reduce air pollution in UNS,” said Prof. Reviono.
