UNS — The Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, inaugurated Orchidarium in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) on Saturday (1/10/2022), commemorating FMIPA 26th Anniversary.
The Orchidarium was built to grow local or endemic orchids of Indonesia. This plant is highly threatened because of the rampant land use conversion and ornamental plant hunt that can be reduced through conservation and cultivation conducted by FMIPA through their Orchidarium.
The Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, appreciated and welcomed the effort and hopes it will become FMIPA UNS’s contribution to conserving orchids. “I hope we can contribute to cultivating and developing excellent orchids hybrid from the threat of extinction,” Prof. Jamal stated.
The inauguration was marked with the signing of the inscription and ribbon cutting ceremony by the Rector of UNS together with the Dean of FMIPA UNS, Drs. Harjana, Ph.D., and university executive boards. The representatives of Bank Jateng also attended the event as a partner institution in the construction of the Orchidarium. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by the handover of dendrobium discolor symbolically from Bank Jateng to the Rector of UNS and from the Rector to the Dean of FMIPA UNS to be cultivated and taken care of.
“Orchidarium was established as an effort to complete FMIPA commitment and UNS as a green campus. The Orchidarium becomes a place for Indonesian orchid species and becomes a part of the faculty’s efforts in conserving superior orchid variety,” Harjana stated.
Further, Harjana is committed to taking care of the orchids, and FMIPA has the capacity and human resource quality to develop the conservation of Indonesia’s local orchids. Humas UNS
