UNS – The Southeast Asian Students Karate Championship, Semar Cup XI had already finished on Sunday (03/10/2019). However, the sweet memories of the match would not be forgotten easily. At least for Surya Dimas Gempal Prahara, a karateka who had contributed a gold medal to Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS).
The man familiarly is called Dimas, had succeeded to win a gold medal in the event. He had been stated as the winner of the Semar Cup XI Karate Championship for the Kumite 60 Kg class. He won the medal after beating a karateka from Politeknik Semarang in the final match with the total score 8-0 for Dimas.
Beforehand, in the semi-final, Dimas had faced a karateka from Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), the strongest competitor in this championship, but he managed to win the match with 9-1 points for him.
This student of Sports Coaching Education Department of Faculty of Sports (Penkepor FKOR) 2018 thanked to God and to all who had supported him. He said that he was delighted to make proud of UNS in the sports.
The success that he achieved was inseparable from the intensive preparation. “In a week, there were six exercises and I did not forget to do some self-practices in my boarding house. Then, when I came back home to Jepara, I used to practice for two until four times a day at the club that had been raising me,” explained Dimas, Wednesday (03/13/2019).
Before competing, he realized that he would face some great athletes. Moreover, this championship was attended by five countries, namely, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia. Nevertheless, it did not make him pessimistic.
“This is a prestigious match which was attended by excellent athletes. I personally did not have significant problems but I have to struggle when competing in BOB class. My opponent was tall, smart, and speedy,” he explained.
Before winning a gold medal in Semar Cup XI, he has already won some outstanding achievements while studying in UNS. Some of them are, third winner of Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) Central Java (men 60 kg), runner up of UNY Cup (men 60 kg), first winner of Porsimaptar (category of group Kata and men 68 kg Kumite), and first winner of UIN Walisongo (senior men 60 kg).
