UNS – Research on the process of tumor formation through DNA methylation examination was conducted by a lecturer from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) Surakarta, dr Pradipto Subiyantoro. This research was the first ever conducted in Indonesia.
DNA methylation is a chemical component attached to a series of DNA that has many functions. One of its functions is the defense mechanism, attached to the virus, which aims to abort this virus’ process in. infecting human body DNA.
If there are many viruses in the human body, then the body will also produce a lot of methyl. When methyl is excessive, it is possible that this methyl is also attached to other genes in humans. When methyl is attached to an important gene, then the gene that should be removed grows and develops into a tumor instead.
In this study, methylation in important genes can be monitored by bisulfite skuensing method. It is to calculate the growth and acceleration of the amount of methyl attached to the gene each month.
The purpose of this study is to provide socialization to the community that there is a way to predict the growth of tumors since the early stages. Even so, this research will still take a long time because it requires further research along with obstacles in the form of expensive research financing.
“This research is just the beginning stage because further research should be done; it will create the standardization of the size to be used. In addition, the cost of inspection is still expensive,” said Pradipto. humas-red.uns/Sav/Eln
