UNS — The limitation of academic activities in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta affects the life of cats that live around the campus. In the current condition, the cats in UNS are starved because they do not get food from the academic members who voluntary feed them or gave them leftovers from the canteens. Considering this phenomenon, since April 2020, UNS students made an initiative to raise funds and feed UNS cats by putting foods at certain places. The activity is not limited to Kentingan campus, but also campuses in other places such as in Kleco, Pabelan, and Vocational School.
“We are concerned, the source of foods for them (cats) are very limited and even there is none because students are required to join online classes and most of the canteens in the campus are closed,” Agus the coordinator of the action conveyed on Sunday (20/9/2020). He explained that the fund-raising program is conducted through the dissemination of information in @kucinguns official account, WhatsApp and Facebook. As for feeding, Agus and team performed it one every three days by refilling the food dispenser they installed at the beginning of the movement.
“We provided durable foods so that we can feed periodically. And to maintain the quality of cat foods,” the student from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) added.
Besides foods, another frequent need of the cats is the medication for scabies to diarrhea. Lastly, he and his team try to provide first aids and bring the cats to veterinarian using the funds they raised. Currently, the fundraising for UNS cats has been conducted four times. The first fundraising was on April, which received great support and they collected more than 4-million-rupiah fund. Besides the enthusiasm in donating money, the number of volunteers that joined the movement also increased, starting with 10 volunteers, now the movement has 34 volunteers.
