UNS – The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa attended Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta to give a public lecture in front of UNS new students for the academic year 2019/2020 at GPH Haryo Mataram Auditorium on Wednesday (8/14/2019). In front of the new students, the governor engaged Generation Z to reach achievements for Indonesia as the previous generation had ever done.

Khofifah stated that the public lecture focused on Generation Z, people who were born between 1995 and 2010. This generation has different typology compared with the Generation Alpha who was born after 2011 and the older generation who was born before 1995.

“Let us see the old generation when Bung Karno (Comrade Karno) was 29 years old, he was brave to establish a party. At the age of 24, he made the Indonesia Association Movement. The point is like the Generation Z today whose age is around 24 years old, the old generation had made great histories of Indonesia,” she explained in front of the students who joined 2019 New Students Orientation Program (PKKMB).

Moreover, Khofifah gave examples of people from “now” generation such as, the CEO of Bukalapak and the CEO of Ruang Guru who had 13 million users from the application that they had developed. They are still in their young age but they could see the opportunity by developing e-commerce.

Then, Khofifah also engaged the students to build tolerance among them. Based on the survey conducted by UIN Syarif Hidayatullah in 34 provinces, Generation Z tends to be intolerant. At the end of the lecture, she invited the students to sing Indonesian Patriotic Song, Tanah Airku. “Through this song, hopefully, the Generation Z understands that we eat and we live from Indonesia,” Khofifah said.

Meanwhile, the UNS Rector, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho highly appreciated the Governor of East Java who had given the public lecture for the new students. The topic was very interesting and inspiring. “So, the new students should uphold tolerance, let’s love our homeland and dedicate ourselves more to Indonesia,” Prof Jamal mentioned.
