UNS Library Holds International Seminar of Big Data

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Library held international seminar under the theme “Big Data: Building and Disseminating Research in Higher Education” in Werkudara Room, UNS Library, Tuesday (03/19/2019). The seminar discussed the importance of the use of big data for higher education.

The invited speakers were Diu Seng SEE, Ph.D, an Account Manager Clarivate Analytics, and Dr. Eng, Agus Purwanto S.T., M.T., a lecturer of Engineering Faculty UNS. In the event, Diu Seng SEE, Ph.D. explained about the simple concept of big data. He illustrated the big data as buffet dishes. The dishes are many and various yet not all of them can be consumed. Likewise, the use of big data needs to be selected for the use.

“Information is not a knowledge. To find out the value of data, we need to adjust them into the human’s proportion. We called it as Big Data which appeares like Little Data. The data are valuable after they are processed,” Diu Seng SEE stated.

The lecturer of Engineering Faculty UNS, Dr. Eng, Agus Purwanto S.T., M.T. delivered several utilizations of big data for the educational institutions. “The core of the big data is a prediction to predict the possibility to occur. This technology can also be used to predict the students enrollment, occupation, and condition as well as the development of the university in the future,” he explained.

The Big Data technology is then frequently set as the benchmark basis for the institution or company in formulating the strategy or business decision. Agus Purwanto also discussed about the phenomenon of World Class University (WCU).

“We frequently become imitative. When a university featured ‘world class university’ then it is followed by the other universities. We compete to publish the jargons but have no idea of how to manifest world class university,” Agus said.

That Chairman of Material Maju Laboratory of Chemical Engineering Department UNS subsequently suggested the institution to do the research before determining the jargons. By using the big data analysis, the university possibly makes an accountable decision. Humas UNS/Mia/Dty
