UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has, for the third time, successfully entered the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) in the latest release, THE WUR 2024, announced on 27 September 2023. UNS is ranked between 1201 and 1500 out of 1,904 universities in 108 countries assessed by THE. THE is a leading university ranking institution based in the United Kingdom.

In Indonesia, 24 universities had made it into THE WUR 2024, with the highest ranking being the University of Indonesia (UI) at 801-1000. UNS is ranked 1201-1500, along with Unair, ITB, BINUS, UGM, IPB, USK, and ITS. In order, UNS stands as the 7th-best university in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., the Rector of UNS, stated that there have been some changes in the methodology for THE WUR 2024. The ranking is based on five pillars: Teaching (weighted at 29.5%), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), Industry (4%), and International Outlook (7.5%). Each pillar consists of various indicators. Teaching is measured by reputation in teaching, student-to-lecturer ratio, doctoral and bachelor’s student ratio, lecturers with doctoral degrees, and institutional income. Research Environment is assessed by reputation in research, research income, and research productivity. Research Quality is measured by citations, research strength, research excellence, and research influence. Industry is measured by industry revenue and the number of patents. Lastly, International Outlook is determined by the number of international students, the number of international lecturers, and publications in collaboration with international partners.

Prof. Jamal Wiwoho expressed his gratitude that UNS has achieved a ranking between 1201-1500 in THE WUR 2024 and is the 7th highest-ranked university in Indonesia, alongside other prestigious universities in Indonesia like ITB and UGM.
