UNS Cultural Studies Master’s Program Holds International Conference on Cultural Studies 2023

UNS — The Cultural Studies Master’s Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held the International Conference on Cultural Studies (ICCUS) on Saturday (14/10/2023) at UNS Inn. This international event was divided into two sessions, the main session and parallel sessions, with participation from about 40 presenters from several countries.

There were three speakers: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Novel a/k Lyndon from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Heddy Shri Ahimsa-Putra M.A., M.Phil. from Gadjah Mada University, Prof. Dr. Warto, M. Hum. from UNS, and Dr. Susanto, M. Hum. from UNS. The moderator for this event was Dr. Mibtadin, S.Fil.I., M.S.I.

In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Novel discussed the anthropological perspective of cross-cultural communication on the social integration of Malaysian Chinese and indigenous communities. Prof. Warto covered the topic of cultural identity in the era of globalization. Prof. Dr. Heddy presented the phenomenon of the football supporter group, Brigata Curva Sud (BCS) Ultras Yogyakarta. Finally, the last speaker, Dr. Susanto, M. Hum. explained the topic of identity conflicts in Surakarta in the early 20th – century.

In his opening speech, Dr. Susanto, the Head of the Cultural Studies Master’s Program UNS, stated that the chosen theme for the event is excellent.

“This is one of those themes that has been globally significant and timeless because global culture is always related to identity. We plan to make this the theme of our annual conference. The sub-themes of this event are diverse, including culture, art, fashion, language, architecture, history, literature, popular culture, urban symbols, and ceremonies,” he explained.

The ICCUS 2023 was warmly welcomed by the Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Warto. “The faculty welcomes and greatly appreciates this event. Moreover, the chosen theme is very interesting for discussion and sharing. We hope that this event continues, expanding scholarly insights into the study of culture,” he concluded. Humas UNS
