UNS—Muhana Fawwazy Ilyas, a fresh graduate doctor from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, is set to take his medical oath on August 13, 2024. He achieved cum laude honors twice throughout his studies: completing his Medical Degree in 7 semesters with a GPA of 3,62 and his Medical Profession in 4 semesters with a GPA of 3,76. In addition, he has contributed to over 70 collaborative research projects in the past two years and has published 15 Scopus-indexed articles, authored a book and application, and four SINTA-indexed articles.

dr. Muhana began his research journey two years ago, focusing on neuroscience, neurology, and neurosurgery. His journey started with his thesis titled “Visual-spatial Intelligence and Learning Modality Preference for Neuroanatomy Comprehension Among Medical Students,” which was published in the Education in Medicine Journal (a Scopus Q2 indexed journal). “This research stemmed from my interest in addressing the challenges of neuroanatomy learning, which many medical students find difficult,” dr. Muhana explained on Thursday (25/7/2024).

During his education at UNS, he served as a research assistant in various departments, including the Department of Neurology under the supervision of Dr. Diah Kurnia Mirawati, dr., Sp.S(K), focusing on catamenial epilepsy and genetic mutations in photosensitive epilepsy. He also worked in the Department of Orthopedics under Dr. dr. Romaniyanto, Sp.OT(K) Spine, MARS, and Dr. dr. Tito Sumarwoto, Sp.OT(K), M.Kes., S.H., M.Hum., exploring the use of stem cells in peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries. Additionally, he was a research and laboratory assistant in the Department of Anatomy under dr. Nanang Wiyono, M.Kes, primarily in the field of neuroscience.

dr. Muhana has also achieved several other accolades, such as winning the International Gold Medalist at the 5th World Young Inventors Exhibition 2021 with the invention “Effleurage Robot: Innovation Relaxation Robot to Reduce Labor Pain.” This project was guided by Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, S.ST., M.Kes. and funded by the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) grant with support from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Indonesia. He was also a Semi-Finalist at the Hasanuddin National Medical Olympiad and Scientific Competition (HAMOSCO) 2021, won 2nd place in the Basic Medical Science Olympiad 2019 in Anatomy, and 1st place in the National Video Contest – LKTI LECRON 2019.

In addition to his academic achievements, dr. Muhana is active in various organizations and humanitarian projects. He served as the Coordinator for the UNS Covid-19 Vaccination Program, leading 240 committee members and 150 volunteers from 12 different faculties to distribute approximately 30.000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to the public around Surakarta. He also held positions such as Chief of Government and Non-Government Organizations in the Indonesian Medical Student Senate Association (ISMKI), Minister of Public Relations in the UNS Faculty of Medicine Student Executive Board (BEM), and chaired several national events like the “MILESTONE” National Symposium, Workshop, and Paper Competition, and Volunteer Coordinator for the Health Sector at the SDGs Youth Action for Samosir.
