Another UNS Student Innovation: Contactless Thermometer

UNS — Student of Electrical Engineering Program Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Bakasrian Fericoari, successfully created a contactless thermometer combined with an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser. This innovation was developed when he participated in Student Community Service Program (KKN), in which he shared the production method with his neighborhood in Talangsari, Lampung Timur.

To uns.ac.id, Brian—his nickname—explained that this tool could detect a person’s body temperature without an operator. People who want to check their body temperature can move their bodies closer to the tool. This tool uses a microcontroller Arduino with an ultrasonic sensor.

“The production started with cutting acrylic as the body of the tool according to the prepared design. After that assembling the electrical components, and then Arduino programming,” the KKN Nusantara UNS member explained on Friday (26/2/2021).

Brian got the initiative to build the tool after observing a similar thermometer in a shopping mall. Through his internet data searching, he found out a similar tool is quite pricey. This high price tempted him to create his own device and connect it with an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser.

Low community awareness on Covid-19 health protocols in his village encouraged Brian to educate his neighborhood, primarily through Karang Taruna members. His program was fruitful, and they successfully granted three innovative thermometers to their village. He explained that these tools would be installed in places where people gather, such as village mosques, village hall, and village meeting points.

Regarding people’s responses toward his program, Brian said that the villagers were supportive during the production process, not to mention this is the first tool the village has. Brian was not alone in implementing his program. He received assistance from Karang Taruan members and utilized his KKN funds to produce the devices. He is delighted that his knowledge can benefit the people in his hometown.

“They were enthusiastic and became aware of maintaining their hands clean before and after an activity,” he said. Humas UNS
