UNS — Proud achievement is accomplished by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta student. A student from Physics Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP). Lisnaeni or Lisna, won 3rd place in the Science Week FISIP Universitas Galuh essay competition in early July 2021.
Lisna needs to compete with the other 67 participants from various universities in Indonesia to achieve her accomplishment. In an interview with uns.ac.id on Tuesday (20/7/2021), Lisna explained that she discussed the idea of utilizing patchwork from Batik. The current pandemic and PPKM policy applied by the government that affects people’s economic life encourage Lisna to develop the concept.
“There are many Batik MSMEs in Surakarta. So, I use the patchworks from Batik. Usually, this waste is used to make brooches, bags, doormats, and other stuff. But the patchwork also has a potential to be created into a more aesthetic product,” she explained.
Different from other patchwork results, Lisna develops line art from batik patchwork. “Usually, line art has a monochromatic color, only black and white. This one uses Batik patchwork, so it will be more colorful and has Batik motives. Hopefully, this could become a creative industry and recover the community economy amid the Covid-19 pandemic,” she added.
The selection process for the essays was conducted online. All participants send their essays to the committee to be assessed. The committee selected the Best Five essays and invited the writers to have an online presentation before the judges. In the Best Five round, Lisna competed with participants from Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Negeri Semarang, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, and Universitas Sumatera Utara.
When she was announced as the winner, Lisna was surprised because she didn’t expect to win. She stated that she participated because she is waiting for her thesis revision from the supervisor, and she has free time for about a week. “While waiting, I feel like I am not productive; I don’t have anything to do. So, I tried to participate in the competition. When I heard that I won, Alhamdulillah, I am grateful. It’s been a while since I participate in a competition,” Lisna said.
Before concluding the interview, Lisna hoped that she could maximize her time as a university student. “Even though I am in the last semester, I hope (I) could maximize my university student status. Hopefully, my friends also could maximize their time as university students. Use it for productive activities, participate in competition, organization, research, internship, or other activities, as long as it develops your potential,” she reminded. Humas UNS
