UNS — Unlimited creativity is reflected in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students are participating in Student Community Service Program (KKN) UNS in Jekani Village, Mondokan Subdistrict, Sragen District, Central Java. Students in the KKN team for January-February 2021 conducted a mask production program from batik jumputan for the local community.
The event started with material and followed by practice was attended by housewives and children in Jekani Village. In an interview with uns.ac.id on Sunday (28/2/2021), Vivi Annisa as a person in charge of the program said that the training was selected because the local community lacks knowledge on batik jumputan. The product of the activity, will be distributed to all participants.
“Jumputan comes from Javanese language, jumput means taking with all fingers. Batik jumputan production process is slightly different from batik in general, by not using wax and canting. The batik motif is created by taking fabric, putting seeds inside or wrinkled fabric using thread, and dip the fabric into the dye,” Vivi explained.
The practice the create batik jumputan starts with designing the motif on paperboard or manila paper. The design then copied to white fabric using a red marker, followed by basting or taking part of material using thread and seeds. The fabric is then dyed using naphthol. Vivi added that before soaked in the dye, the fabric should first soak in water to open the cloth fiber.
“After soaked in naphthol solution, the fabric is soaked in garam Biru B (blue dye) solution and then dried under the sun. The next step is undoing the jumputan (part tied or basted). The practice ends with soaking the fabric in water to remove marker marks to get beautiful color and motif,” a student from Craft Arts (Textile Design) Program explained.
The event runs smoothly thanks to local community enthusiasm, who always pays attention to the trainer’s direction from the explanation to the practice. High curiosity from the participants makes them absorb the materials well. “The training provides benefits by enriching student and community experience on jumputan production,” Nafis, one of the local community members who participated in the training, stated.
Before concluding the interview, Vivi added that one of the program outputs is producing masks using batik jumputan. “This is an effort to continue a campaign to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” the Person in Charge of Team 68 KKN UNS program stated. Humas UNS
