UNS — Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Doctoral Program in Education Science Postgraduate School Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta graduated new doctor. Joko Sulianto, an Universitas PGRI Semarang teacher, succeeded in achieving doctoral decree through the Doctoral Promotion Open Examination for the Doctoral Program in Education Science Postgraduate School UNS on Friday (15/1/2021).
Joko Sulianto completed his Doctoral Program with a dissertation titled “The Development of Advance Organizer Learning Model Based on Open-ended Approach to Improve Student’s Reasoning in Mathematics at the Elementary School”. The Doctoral Promotion Open Examination for the Doctoral Program in Education Science Postgraduate School UNS was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Joko’s success in completing his doctorate is inseparable from his supervisors’ role, Prof. Dr. Sunardi, M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Sri Anitah, M.Pd., and Prof. Drs. Gunarhadi., MA., Ph.D.
Joko Sulianto stated the analysis result of the mathematics learning process at the Elementary School (SD) shows adequate reasoning ability. All respondents almost agree on the 2013 curriculum if the reasoning is a vital skill to be improved. Thus, model development is needed to strengthen reasoning skills. “Considering that learning model is not appropriate to improve student’s reasoning, therefore, it is necessary to develop a learning model that is oriented towards improving elementary students’ reasoning skills,” Joko Sulianto explained.
The developed model that can improve students’ reasoning has a syntagmatic of initial setting, advance organizer presentation, assignment presentation, and strengthening cognitive processing. Based on Joko Sulianto’s research, an advanced organizer model based on open-ended is effective in improving students’ reasoning. His finding is also published in Scopus indexed journal and presented at an international conference in the related field. He also published a guidebook on the advance organizer learning model based on an open-ended approach to improve elementary school students’ reasoning and a supplement book for four grade Mathematics based on the open-ended problem in fractions.
