HMP Pandawa UNS Raises the Topic of Javanese Literature Development in Modernization through a Cultural Webinar

UNS — Student Association in Local Literature (Javanese Language and Literature) Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Cultural Webinar on “Gumregahing Sastra lan Budaya ing Globalisasi” (The Rise of Literature and Culture in Globalization) as a part of Pandawa Labuh Jawa (Palawa) Event 2021.

The webinar invited Taufiq Hakim from Komunitas Jangkah Nusantara and KRRA Budayaningrat as the Chief of Senior High School MGMP of Javanese Language Central Java Province. Indria Rohmayanti acted as a moderator in the event attended by more than 80 participants.

As the first speaker, Taufiq Hakim delivered material on “Javanese Literature and Modernization” and explained the periods of Javanese Literature, including Old Javanese Literature (9-15 M), Middle Javanese Literature (13-16 M), New Javanese Literature (15/16-18 M), Transition Javanese Literature (early 19 – early 20 M), and Modern Javanese Literature (19 M – to now). Taufiq added that the pattern and form of Javanese literature are inseparable from its cultural ecosystem. Religion, political, power, and social structure affect the Javanese literature form in each period. Therefore, in the rapid and complex today’s world, Javanese literature needs to adjust itself in terms of content and media.

Taufiq explained that today’s Javanese literature is strongly affected by globalization and technological advancement. Javanese literature activists, therefore, could share the literature through various media, including performance, radio broadcasts, and podcasts. “I think this is possible to develop, especially by students who are at their peak of creativity,” Taufiq Hakim stated on Saturday (16/10/2021).

KRRA Budayaningrat emphasized the importance of implementation and regulation on the preservation of language, literature, and script in Central Java, considering the large number of literary works that need to be preserved. This information was shared in the second session of the webinar. KRRA Budayaningrat explained that Javanese language, literature, and script in Central Java are protected under the Central Java Local Regulation (Perda) Number 9 of 2012. In comparison, Law Number 5 of 2017 regarding the Development of Culture mentioned all manuscripts with cultural and historical contents as a part of cultural development. The Javanese culture needs to be aligned with the current needs.

“That is why we need to reexamine. Currently, Javanese literature should match the needs,” KRRA Budayaningrat stated.

Palawa 2021 was held by a student association named HMP Pandawa with several series of events, including a short story competition (Lomba Cerkak), Kelas Ageman Jawa, Cultural Webinar, and Malam Purnama Sastra. Bayu Murdantyo, as the Chief of Pandawa 2021, hoped that this webinar could encourage the young generation to love their culture. Humas UNS
