UNS — S1 Food Technology Science Study Program (ITP) Faculty of Agriculture (FP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a study program activity in collaboration with world-class partners entitled “5th International Guest Lecture Week of Food Science and Technology (5th IGLW)”. This event presented Top Scientist speakers from universities with high world rankings, namely rank 57 and rank 74 QS by subject Agriculture and Forestry.
The 5th IGLW was held through a grant from the UNS world-class university program with the support of LPDP funds from the DAPT funding scheme. This guest lecture activity was attended by 200 participants consisting of students and lecturers from the ITP FP UNS study program.
Dr. Setyaningrum Ariviani, the Chair of the 5th IGLW event, said that this year’s IGLW invited guest lecturers from universities included in the QS 100 by subject in the field of agriculture and forestry, namely from Kasetsart University, Thailand (rank 57) and from Putera Malaysia University, Malaysia ( rank 74). IGLW 2023 was held offline on 16 May 2023 and online on 22 May 2023 after previously being held entirely online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“ITP study program has successfully held four IGLW events from 2016 to 2021 and this year is the 5th IGLW. IGLW is a series of guest lecture activities with lecturers from abroad that aim to provide broader knowledge and experience, especially for students and lecturers,” Dr. Setyaningrum explained in a press release sent to uns.ac.id, Wednesday (31/5/2023).
The Dean of FP UNS, Prof. Samanhudi, welcomed and officially opened the 5th IGLW at the Ballroom Tower UNS on 16 May 2023. Besides the Dean of FP UNS, the Head of the ITP Study Program, Prof. Danar Praseptiangga also gave a speech at this event. Through this guest lecture students got more information about current issues in the field of food science and technology. He expressed his hope that after this event, good cooperation would be established between UNS, Kasetsart University and UPM, especially in the ITP study program. “Several things that can be done include joint publications and collaborative research, student exchanges, and other collaborative activities,” Prof. Danar explained.
Assoc. Prof. Sirichai Songsermpong from the Faculty of Agro-industry, Kasetsart University, Thailand delivered material in the first session guest lecture on Tuesday (16/5/2023) with the topic “Recent Advances in Rice Processing”.
Various innovations in processed rice products based on GABA rice that have functional value such as instant GABA noodles, canned Gaba brown rice, rice snacks, and GABA rice vermicelli have been produced. GABA is an important molecule that acts as a neurotransmitter, is anti-stress, provides a calming effect, improves mood, and can lower blood pressure.
In addition, the technology for processing various rice products using a microwave was also presented. Rice can be processed into various innovative processed products that are delicious, safe and healthy using environmentally friendly technology.
On the same day, on the agenda for the second session of the guest lecture, Assoc. Prof. Sirichai explained material with the theme “Recent Research Trends in Food Science and Technology in Thailand”. He gave an overview of the latest research developed by academics at the Kasetsart University Faculty of Agro-Industry.
This session also explored the potential for collaborative research, publications and student exchanges between the Faculty of Agro-Industry Kasetsart University and FP UNS. On the third session guest lecture agenda, Monday (22/5/2023), Dr. Mohd. Shamzi Mohamed from the Department of Bioprocess Technology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia delivered material on the topic “Recent Update of Fermentation Technology for Food and Bioprocess Products” online via Zoom.
