UNS – KSR (Volunteer Corps) Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI-Indonesian Red Cross), in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held blood donor on Tuesday (21/7/2020), in the Institute for Research and Community Engagement (LPPM) UNS. This blood donor event was carried out while still paying attention to health protocols.
When participants want to participate in the blood donor, there are a number of things that must be done beforehand regarding the blood donor protocol. First, the body temperature is checked, then, donors must wash their hands with soap or use hand sanitizers provided by the committee at the location. Afterward, participants register as a blood donor, which followed by a medical examination including blood pressure checks, weight scales, and hemoglobin checks. After the participant is declared healthy and can participate in a blood donor, the participant can enter the blood collection room.
During this blood donor event entitled ‘Health for All’, KSR PMI Unit in UNS received 53 applicants. From the number, 42 blood bags are collected. The Head of Blood Donor, Annisa, states that this blood donor is held to fulfill bloodstock in PMI that continuously depleting. “The objective is to meet the decreasing bloodstock in PMI and mostly aimed for the students staying in the surrounding campus area and the general public,” Annisa explains.
The blood donor activity has several functions, as mentioned by KSR PMI UNS, donating blood can make the heart-healthy, reduce the risk of cancer, regular renewal of red blood cells, burning calories, get a free health check-up, get a free blood analysis check, prevent premature aging, and reduce the level of iron in the blood.
One of the participants, Tety Seftiana from the Special Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS mentioned that donating blood can be useful not only for others but also for herself. Also, according to Tety, donating blood during the Covid-19 pandemic can contribute to humanity. Humas UNS
