UNS – The Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta become one of the faculties that need to prepare a strategy for its learning activity during the New Normal. This due to most of its course is delivered in the form of practical course or commonly known as studio, which certainly constrained by the application of the online lecture system.
According to the previous release, Prof. Ahmad Yunus as the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs UNS, explains that UNS Academic Calendar for the next semester August-December will keep going. However, during the new normal, UNS will prioritize the online lectures until the end of the semester or until there is a further instruction from the Task Force for the Acceleration of Covid-19 Handling.
Following this, the Dean of FSRD UNS, Dr. Rahmanu Widayat, M.Sn, states that FSRD currently prepares the New Normal learning system, which is adjusted to the faculty’s need. “We are mapping the learning media that appropriate for each course. Whether it is sufficient with PowerPoint, e-book, teaching video, or there are other digital media,” explains Dr. Rahmanu, when contacted by uns.ac.id on Thursday (25/6/2020).
He also adds that for a practical course, they endeavored to use learning videos in the form of video tutorials. “We are working on this. For instance painting studio in Fine Arts Study Program, video tutorials are needed to be designed, which discuss painting techniques on canvas, sculpture making, and others,” he adds.
Related with student internship, Dr. Rahmanu states that the program can be carried out through an online system. Some companies and galleries even offer online internship collaboration, such as interior design and visual communication design, which can be done remotely.
In the short-term, for the next semester, FSRD UNS also prepares long-term planning for offline lectures if the condition allows them to do so. “In the long-term, we planned to implement blended learning. We mapped the courses, started now, that can be held fully using the offline system and the courses that can be combined with the online systems,” says Dr. Rahmanu.
Currently, FSRD UNS has four studies programs for the undergraduate degree and each study program has its own studio. Finishing the discussion, Dr. Rahmanu hopes that during the New Normal, the learning activities in the four study programs and the master program can run smoothly. He also advised FSRD academicians, especially students, to keep up their enthusiasm for work and achievement even in the midst of a pandemic. Such as Nur Hidayanti, a student of Fine Arts Study Program, who won the creative educative video in UGM with a theme ‘Competition From Home 2020, It’s Not Social Distancing, Just Physical Distancing’. As well as Rijal Hasyim Rifai, a student from Visual Communication Design Study Program won a creative video competition through Instagram with a COVID-19 theme, organized by Sragen Student Association Gadjah Mada 2020.
“Aside from students’ works, a dance movie entitled “Morning Coffee” by Dr. Deny Tri Ardianto, the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, FSRD UNS became the favorite champion in the Virtual Versatility Dance Fest – The Quarantine Room in the United States, as well as the official selection at international dance film festivals in several countries,” conclude Dr. Rahmanu.
