UNS – The student association (UKM) Jong Scientist is a new association in Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta that provide a place for scientific activities such as Student Creativity Program (PKM), public speaking, and competition. It is interesting to know that this unit is just established recently because of FMIPA outstanding student’s restlessness because there is no scientific association in FMIPA. From this, Jong Scientist is established on 1 March with a secretariat in KM Building 2nd Floor, Sport and Art Student Association FMIPA UNS. This organization was pioneered by Lingga Aji Andika, Khoirul Jamaluddin, Yochidamai Akhsanitaqwim, and Taufiq Candra Hidayat.
This organization is chaired by Muhammad Adam Firdausi, who stated that they have assisted the village as one of its long-term projects. The target of realization is the third year from the establishment of this organization. Considering the pandemic, according to Adam, there maybe adjustment in the plan. Adam also stated that they have many scientific works that have not been applied. These works will be socialized to the community that has applicative potential related to these scientific works.
“For example, if there is a region with a potential of reeds, it can be used to produce bio-ethanol and bio-degradable container from the ethanol production waste. In FMIPA there are many programs such as physics and informatics they can also apply technology that is more developed and suitable for young people,” Adam stated.
This year, Jong Scientist develop a collaboration with FMIPA Student Executive Board (BEM) FMIPA and FMIPA sport and health organization to conduct Olympiad. In the fifth year, Jong Scientist plans to conduct the national level competition. Adam hopes that Jong Scientist can provide a positive impact in scientific activities in FMIPA.
The establishment of Jong Scientist has brought positive impacts for FMIPA students, for example with coaching for an outstanding student, essay writing and scientific writing training, and foster village. This is all starting from student awareness and concern toward problems around them.
