UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved a significant milestone in both national and international education rankings. In the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings (AUR) 2025, UNS secured the top position in Indonesia. This recognition was specifically for Sport Science. On the global stage, the university ranked within the 401–500 bracket. This ranking reinforces the quality of its education and research in this field.

Key Ranking Factors for THE AUR 2025

According to a report from detik.com on Wednesday (30/4/2025), Times Higher Education based the rankings on 18 performance indicators. The report grouped these indicators into five key areas. Those were teaching (24.5%), research environment (28%), research quality (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry engagement (10%). Experts carefully calibrate these indicators to offer a comprehensive comparison of universities across Asia.

THE AUR 2025 evaluates institutions based on teaching quality, research output and impact, knowledge transfer, and international collaboration. The results serve as a vital reference for students, academics, industry stakeholders, and governments assessing higher education institutions in Asia.

Sport Science Recognition in Indonesia

In the Sport Science category, UNS outperformed other leading universities in Indonesia. Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) placed second, ranked in the 501–600 global range. Other universities in the 601+ global category were Universitas Negeri Malang, Universitas Negeri Padang, and Universitas Negeri Semarang. Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Universitas Padjadjaran, and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia also ranked in this category. Universitas Sriwijaya joined the group as well.

At the Asian level, prominent institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the National University of Singapore secured the top rankings. These universities dominated the rankings across the region. However, UNS secured a placement in the 401–500 global tier. This achievement highlights its growing prominence on the international higher education landscape, particularly in Sport Science.

UNS Rector’s Statement on the Achievement

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed his gratitude for this achievement. He emphasized that it reflects the collective effort of the entire UNS academic community. He specifically highlighted the contribution of the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) UNS.

Alhamdulillah, UNS has received recognition as the top national university in Sport Science according to THE AUR 2025. This recognition serves as concrete evidence of the growth of our academic programs and research. It also demonstrates that our efforts continue to gain international acknowledgment,” Prof. Hartono said.

He further shared that this achievement aligns with the UNS’s vision. UNS aims to become a world-class university excelling in science, technology, humanities, arts, and sport sciences.

“We remain committed to improving academic quality, enhancing research productivity, and expanding our international networks. This achievement is not the end goal. It serves as motivation for us to contribute even more meaningfully to the global academic and sports landscape,” he concluded.

Prof. Hartono hopes this recognition will inspire the entire UNS academic community. He encourages them to innovate, boost research productivity, and strengthen both national and international collaborations.
