The recent advancement of Information and communication technology has brought humans to the new civilization era, which is Netizen Civilization, marked by the change in communication pattern in civil society. The term ‘Netizen Civilization’ appears to reflect this current condition where the ability to easily acquire and distribute information is within everyone’s reach. This was a scientific statement by Andrik Purwosito, Lecturer in Faculty of Politics and Social Sciences (FISIP), on Silaturahmi Tahun Baru 2017 Keluarga Besar Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) – 2017 New Year Community Gathering of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in UNS Auditorium, Tuesday (3/1/2017).
On this event, which themed ‘Facing Netizen Civilization’, Andrik illustrated Netizen Civilization into four aspects, which are: everybody controls information, real time, click and share, free/new identity, and Nano communication. Those four aspects mark the change in human concept from citizen to netizen. “Human must be more tolerant and more open because it is important to transform the differences into the special characteristics” he explained. He also delivered a way to cope with Netizen Civilization by intellectual and religious approach. Those two approaches are considered effective to filter information wisely.
Aside from that, according to Andrik, some foundations must be constructed in order to minimize the negative impacts coming from information distribution. Those foundations are Global Hidden Agenda Setting (carefully filter information that has been contaminated by particular interest), Community is a Power (Developing solidarity and tolerance within the society to promote spirit of nationality), Desire for Interdependence (Avoid aggressive nature to maintain relation), and Technology of Freedom (Stop primordial concept). Those four concepts are important to be prepared by every individual to cope with massively growing virtual community in recent times.
In this event, which also attended by lecturers, education personnels, and UNS Dharma Wanita, UNS Rector Ravik Karsidi delivered an opening speech to the attendants. “We, as the campus community, must have ICT literacy by not simply copying, pasting, and sharing all information we got. We will cooperate to no longer become followers, but we can also play a role. UNS has many potentials to be maximized.” Moreover, Ravik also delivered his hopes and wishes in the beginning of 2017 as the momentum to reform the behavior in facing the changes wisely.
