UNS — Research Group in HGR Art Study, from the Fine Arts Study Program, Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, held a community service program entitled ‘Implementation of Paper and Plant Waste Art Works in Pelemsewu, Bantul, Yogyakarta’. The Head of Community Service Program, Nooryan Bahari, states that this program aims to answer the go green issue during the ongoing pandemic that needs special attention. Products from paper recycling are not new in Indonesia. Since the 2000s, this product is starting to gain public attention and was booming due to its uniqueness. Issues regarding go green, which still reverberates until now, making these products from recycled materials more attractive. Usually, products from recycled materials are used as souvenirs at various weddings and birthdays.
“The opportunity to develop this is still wide open because handmade products are more exclusive and are very personal that can be developed by everyone with unique character, different from factory-made machines that tend to be mass production,” Nooryan explains, Thursday (1/10/2020).
Nooryan hopes that the result of this community service can form a group of FSRD UNS Alumni to work creatively in filling spare time. Therefore, they can earn additional income and can be economically independent with sufficient skills to develop a high-value paper art creative industry.
This activity was held every Sunday, starting from August 29th to September 26th, 2020 with Nooryan Bahari, Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, Joko Lulut Amboro, and Novita Wahyuningsih as instructors. The material delivered is related to the waste paper recycling process to be a new sheet of paper with artistic value and making clay paper, which will later be made into 3-dimensional works. This community service activity was held through focus group discussion, counseling, the practice of processing paper and plant waste into works of art, assistance, and evaluating activities every Sunday.
The participation of the FSRD UNS Alumni in this program is excellent. They are actively contributed to the procurement of the training needs and actively sharing experiences in processing paper and plant waste. The alumni consist of Anis Kurniasih, Tahta Gilang, Tri Yuli, and colleagues who welcome the program organized by their former lecturers. They got the opportunity to collaborate to create innovative and creative arts.
“Hopefully, this training can increase the participation of the UNS alumni, especially from the Fine Arts Study Program, in supporting entrepreneurs activity,” Nooryan concluded. Humas UNS
