UNS – Interest in gender issues has brought Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, publish another book entitled “Strategi Mencegah Kekerasan Seksual pada Remaja SMA dan SMK Berbasis Teknologi Informasi (A Strategy to Prevent Sexual Violence in High School and Vocational School Teenagers Based on Information Technology)”. This book is co-authored by Rino Ardhian Nugroho, S.Sos., M.T.I., Ph.D., (Lecturer of FISIP UNS), Yusuf Kurniawan, S.S., M.A. (Lecturer of Faculty of Social Studies), Melda Kumalaningrum (Alumni from the Master Program in Public Health UNS), and Intan Sani Putri (Master Student in Public Administration UNS).
On Thursday (4/6/2020) Prof. Ismi recounts the process of the writing, which started from a research grant provided by the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) covering 3 years research period allowing Prof. Ismi and team to explore gender problems that are still prevalent in society. The issue of IT-based sexual violence in high school and vocational school teens, become the topic chosen.
Taking on a sample from high schools in the ex-residency area of Surakarta, the team chooses 14 schools, which consist of 7 high school and 7 vocational schools. The school chosen was considered as Favorite school by the community and schools that have participated in training related to gender responsiveness or can be said schools that have understood the different needs of women and men in the learning process.
Questionnaires were distributed to 50 students in each school to understand the condition that took place among the students. Besides that, the team also conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and an in-depth interview along with 4 counseling teachers in each chosen school. The result shows that the sexual violence case in sample schools is not high. However, they found several symptoms that can lead to the development of sexual violence in school. Therefore, following the government policy that does not give any tolerance on any type of violence, thus, any potential for violence, including sexual violence, no matter how small they are, need to be eradicated.
During the occasion, it was explained that the advancement in Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) sector is often misused by students to initiate deviant actions that have an adverse effect on students who do not have adequate knowledge about ICT. A case told from a student point of view, who consciously commit deviant acts. They make bets for challenges that refer to harassment, such as challenging a student’s courage to take action on other students who are targeted. On the other hand, there are cases that occur due to a lack of knowledge on how to react toward threats from sexual violence offenders.
The result of research becomes the basis for Prof. Ismi and the team to write a book that can educate people to prevent similar cases to occur. This book is designed in simple language for various parties to understand, especially for teachers and students, and later-on it will available online. Further, the research will also develop a model school free from sexual violence.

Aside from telling her journey in writing the newest book, Prof. Ismi also shares the joy and sorrow in writing a book, saying that it is easy for lecturer to determine the content, however, to formulate the book into something that can be understood by the general public with the various background is challenging.
