UNS — A student of Fine Art Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta successfully obtained an achievement at the international level. Alif Sholihin, as a student of Fine Art Education class of 2016 just won the 2nd position for poster category in ASEAN Youth 2020 Creative Content Competition. The competition held by ASEAN Studies Center Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta on 8th September 2020 was joined by participants from countries in South East Asia.
Alif explained that in the poster he made, it illustrated the ASEAN logo but when zoomed in, there is a picture of colorful group of young people. The color variation, Alif mentioned, shows that these people come from different race, social, cultural, and religious background. “But with a full harmony and enthusiasm they synergized and uphold the ASEAN logo, their gesture represents a unity, sense of belonging, and kinship,” Alif explained on Saturday (14/11/2020).
Through this poster, he wants to share with the ASEAN community and youths that ASEAN is formed from people who are aware of the difference but have a spirit of unity to build a strong community. Therefore, people need to remember that diversity and unity are their identities. Alif also admitted that he was very happy to be selected as the winner, but before that he felt inferior. He stated that the assessment in the competition was different from the design competition that he participated in. “In ASEAN Youth 2020 there are four formats of work that can be submitted, poster, video, short writing, and photo. From these 4 formats, the committee will choose the most representative works to communicate the ‘embracing ASEAN identity to build a resilient community’ theme,” he explained.
He said that he felt inferior when comparing his work with other works in a different format. Especially with those of video format because it has a different principle, components, and audience orientation. Through video, according to Alif, the audience will catch more message in a shorter period of time compared to a poster which is a 2-dimensional medium. This is because a video has sound, visual, and movement but poster only has visual dimension. “But, Alhamdulillah, according to juries, my work gets the 2nd place winner,” last year student explained. Before closing the interview, Alif hopes that the pandemic does not discourage UNS student’s spirit to continue learning and collecting achievements. Humas UNS
