UNS — The alumni of the Visual Communication Design Study Program, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta initiates wall painting on the ‘Mbok Jum’ canteen, Sunday (29/11/2020). The painting is not only increasing its aesthetic impression but also showing the alumni’s love for this legendary canteen in UNS.
The alumni involved in this activity are Ardan Kukuh Prayogo, Prima Tito, and Alfi Andy. The three were used to spending their free time in the canteen. The idea was started, as mentioned by Ardan, with a short message from a colleague in a group chat. The offer was accepted by him afterward. “I volunteered because I want to create something there. The reason is that Bu Ribut who usually took care of the canteen requested us to make the canteen more aesthetic,” he explains.
Ardan reveals that the painting process took around 2-3 hours to finish. Before the process started, he sent a design to the canteen administrator. During the planning and coordination stages, Ardan admits that he faced certain challenges, such as the imposition of restrictions to enter the UNS Campus due to the Covid-19 pandemic that hit Solo. “We start the coordination a long time ago, but due to the pandemic we can only realize the plan around a week ago,” he added.
The alumni of the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) class of 2008 explains that the design for the new look of the canteen is focused on aesthetic and tidiness. He hopes that with this new paint can increase the appeal and give a new feel to canteen visitors who want to enjoy lunch or just to hang out.
“It’s more like an improvement actually. Thus the visitors can enjoy the new ambiance in Mbok Jum canteen and more people will come,” he explains.
After the painting process, Ardan uploaded a picture of the new Mbok Jum canteen looks in his Twitter account at @ardankukuh, which receive quite an impression and was shared 154 times. Similar photos were also uploaded to Ardan’s Instagram account, which in turn attracted the attention of an agency from Jakarta to help Kantin Mbok Jum.
“After I posted the photo to Instagram, the response was positive. Thus Arsy.co agency from Jakarta wants to help Mbok Jum by buying several ‘nasi bungkus’ (a portion of rice wrapped in traditional wrapping, usually banana leaves) to be shared with the community around the canteen,” he concluded.
