SOLO – Sebelas Maret University (UNS) plans owning two electric buses for its public transportation this year. The provision of the buses is through cooperation with Ministry of Research and Technology.

“The provision of the buses is still in submission to Directorate General of Higher Education.  I hope it will be granted,” said Rector of UNS Prof. Dr. Ravik Karsidi, MS on Green Campus Festival “Green Action for Green Culture”, Monday (10/6/2013), in UNS. The buses will have the same capacity with the buses which operating in UNS.

Ravik states that if the electric buses are on operation, they will limit the vehicles going to the campus gradually. Nevertheless, he admits that the policy can not be done by this time only. “There is a certainty to limit the vehicles going to campus. But, it will be done gradually. It is impossible to be done now,” he said.

Rector of UNS also has budgeted 2 millions rupiahs to support UNS’ green campus movement developments totally this year. The budget will be used to sidewalks development, main street enlargement, etc. “The result will be seen on the end of the year,” said Ravik.

On that occasion, Ravik launches also official website Go Green UNS. He appreciates the website. He thinks that it is a great contribution from the students. It keeps in pace with with the announcement of UNS being green campus which was announced officially by Environment Minister, Balthasar Kambuaya, 6 March ago.

He asserts to keep the nature environment comfortable, green, and sustainable is our attentions and responsibilities. Not only the adults and the elder whom involves on it, but also the young ones whom will own the futures. “If the future’s owner has realized and done activities, I guess these are signs for our life to a better life,” he said.

On the other side, The Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNS Prof. Ir. Ari Handono Ramelan, M.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D., states green campus event in UNS is a great achievement. He hopes that green campus can invite humans to keep the world.

He also admits that he is on effort to form the habit of walking in campus. “I walked here from the faculty. I have accustomed myself to walk. I hope that it will be followed by the others. The important point is behaviour. It becomes important moment to awaken our motivation that our nature which we enjoy right now is a loan from our child and grandchild. So, we do not own it, but borrow it. And we will give it back (to them) later,” said Ari.[]
