UNS – Community’s awareness regarding to the importance of waste management is still very low in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the number of waste produced by households keeps increasing. If the intervention doesn’t occur, a disastrous condition might happen as what Ravik Karsidi, rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), said on the US Ambassador’s Visit and certificate granting event to International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) UNS’ team, Sukoharjo Regency, and Karanganyar Regency, Thursday (19/1/2017).
Conducted in UNS Headquarters, Gedung Pusat dr. Prakosa, Regent of Sukoharjo, Wardoyo Wijaya stated that his administration is fortunate to be able to learn US’ waste management system.
“Our visit to US is on good purpose and profitable. Because waste management that has been done there is highly developed,” Wardoyo stated.

Juliyatmono, Regent of Karanganyar, said the government of Karanganyar will soon make a follow-up action regarding the result of his visit to US last December. Nowadays, waste management will be conducted by choosing, packing, and selling. After that, the right technology to manage waste will always be developed and implemented.
Joseph R Donovan, Jr, the US Ambassador for Indonesia, stated that the visit of UNS team, Karanganyar Regency, and Sukoharjo Regency to USA and his visit to UNS is a positive manifestation of partnership relation that has been developed between Indonesia and US, especially in strategic partnership.
“We also discussed about the steps we can make because we feel that this is an important step, we must continue this process,” Joseph said.
Meanwhile, Ravik hopes the US partnership with Indonesia, especially UNS and Solo will not only in waste management, but also in education, culture and other sectors. (Refita Helya Shufia/Dty/Hfz)
