Victorious in UB, FH UNS Students Inaugurated as the First Winner

UNS —- The Ongoing Covid-19 pandemic does not stop the student from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta to accomplish another achievement. Now, it is the turn for the student from the Faculty of Law (FH) UNS who receives the predicate of First Champion in Brawijaya Law Fair Essay Competition XI 2020, Friday (11/9/2020).

In the championship organized by the Executive Student Board (BEM) FH, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang, Kharis Setiawan, write an essay entitled Renewing the Affirmative Action Paradigm as a Social Engineering Tool to Achieve a Just Democracy. The article was written to criticize the affirmative action policy in Indonesia, which according to Kharis, has not met the expected result. He also states that the minimum representation of 30% of women in Parliament is started from the strong patriarchal culture in the community.

“The objective is, aside from fulfilling the requirement of 30% representation in the parliament, of course, to accommodate the interest of women,” explains Kharis on Thursday (17/9/2020).

The existence of law products, which accommodate the needs of women, Kharis considers that this condition can provide justice, benefit, and legal certainty for legal subjects, as well as putting women in an equal position to men in bearing rights and obligations. He added that to fulfill the objective of affirmative action, it will be difficult if the decision is submitted back to the community through the legislative election process. Therefore, there is a need to renew the affirmative action paradigm, by assigning the spot directly to an individual.

“However, if Indonesia’s culture is no longer contain strong patriarchy, such discriminative regulation can be replaced, in line with the Provision of Law No. 7 of 1984 regarding Ratification of the Convention on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women,” explained him.

When asked regarding the preparation for the championship, Kharis revealed that he had prepared his essays thoroughly. He also spent more than 10 (ten) days to prepare himself, nearing the submission on August 20th, 2020. The preparation made were, among other, finding the interesting title in line with the championship theme, preparing the essay content, and processing administrative document in FH UNS as part of administration requirement in applying to the championship.
