UNS Adds Three Professors from FT and FKIP

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta will have a professor inauguration on Wednesday (26/2/2020). The three professors are Prof. Ir. Winny Astuti, M.Sc, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Engineering (FT), Prof. Dr. Eng. Agus Purwanto, S.T, M.T from FT, and Prof. Dr. Asrowi, M.Pd from Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP).

Prof. Ir. Winny Astuti, M.Sc, Ph.D. is the 12th professor in FT and 216th professor in UNS, will deliver an inauguration speech on Community-based Housing Development as an Urban Poverty Alleviation Effort.

The housing sector has a large contribution to urban poverty alleviation. Poverty alleviation on housing sector does not only involve the improvement of community access to housing and urban infrastructure, but also increase the ability and purchasing power of the community in reaching the city’s public infrastructure such as clean water, electricity, sanitation, and waste management.

One of the models developed concerning CBHD as an effort of poverty alleviation is the Community Empowerment of Slum Settlement as Sustainable Urban Poverty Alleviation Effort (PMPKB). “This model is formulated from the result of research in Keprabon Village, Banjarsari Sub-district; Sudiroprajan Village, Jebres Sub-district; Joyosuran Village, Joyotakan Village, and Pajang Village. The result of the study integrates Pajang Village with a city government program,” stated Prof. Winny who is a professor in Urban and Regional Planning FT UNS between the press conference in Goela Kelapa Resto, Tuesday (25/2/2020).

The other innovative model developed is the Integrated Planning Model of Creative Industry based Kampung Tourism in Jayengan Surakarta, Indonesia implemented in Jayengan Village, Surakarta. This model views village settlements as an entity with a city. CBHD model developed in Jayengan can develop the local potential of cultural, culinary, and economic tourism as an entity of urban development after several decades of near extinction. This model can develop Jayengan into the Gem Creative Industry-based Tourism Village Model.

Prof. Dr. Eng. Agus Purwanto, S.T, M.T is the 13th professor in FT and 217th professor in UNS will deliver an inauguration speech on Battery: Future Innovative Source of Energy.

Prof. Agus stated that innovation and technology developed rapidly in various fields today. In the field of transportation, Indonesia has stepped into electricity-based transportation. The transition of the modes of transportation from fossil fuels to electricity becomes a solution to the problem of pollution from vehicles and to reduce the burden of fossil fuel import. In the long-term, the technology with minimum pollution level strongly supports sustainable earth life. For electricity-based transportation and the utilization of renewable energy, the need for the battery as energy storage is crucial.

“I highly believe that almost all of our activities will be supported by equipment whose energy is supplied from batteries in the future. Because of that, the battery will become the source of energy for all electricity-based innovation that will form our future,” stated Prof. Agus.

Given the increasing importance of battery in the development of technology and innovation in the future, Prof. Agus took a role in developing the battery. In line with his educational background as a professor in Chemical Engineering, more innovation is needed for the battery so that it can be publicly implemented in Indonesia.

“The battery that we develop together with the team is a lithium-ion battery. The focus of lithium-ion development is creating a cheap, high quality, safe, and durable battery,” he added.

A cheap lithium-ion battery is produced from cheap raw materials. The development of lithium battery active materials manufacturing using cheap technical materials has been succeeded. To press the production cost, the production process has to be efficient. The research on production with zero waste has been conducted by re-process production waste into active material. To produce a lithium-ion battery with high quality, internal resistance control has an important role. The lower the internal resistance of a battery, the specific power will increase. The result of the study showed that internal resistance can be controlled by adjusting the thickness of the cathode, and by adjusting the wielding set on the electrode sheet. Safe lithium batteries have been made using polymer electrolyte membranes that have high discharge and retention. Lithium batteries with long service life are made using LTO anode materials (lithium titanate).

Technologically, the production process of lithium-ion starting from the manufacture of raw materials until the application on the equipment can already be done. The development of commercialization becomes the next choice with several business options, including start-up, license, and joint venture.

“As an academic person, hopefully, all of these findings can provide a contribution to the science that will enhance our knowledge. Strategically, hopefully, this development can become a stepping stone for our country to be independent in technology, especially on a lithium-ion battery. Practically, lithium-ion batteries have various weaknesses that need solutions. In the future, our research will not only focus on lithium-ion batteries. We will take a step to develop other types of batteries, such as sodium, Sulphur, or other types of battery which technologically have a good prospect. By holding on to technology independence, the use of materials and raw materials that are widely available in Indonesia is our priority. Toward the independence in battery technology is a source of energy for future innovation,” he stated.

As for, Prof. Dr. Asrowi, M.Pd., the 64th professor in FKIP and 218th professor in UNS, will deliver an inauguration speech on Spiritual Counselling as the Alternative to Strengthen Character in 5.0 Era in the Field of Education.

The advancement of science and technology in the 4.0 era and Society 5.0 era must be followed with the spiritual and religious power so that life is not separated from character values. In general, the spiritual character in Society 5.0 is implemented to facilitate and improve the religious and technology awareness, without reducing the true perfection of life, that is intelligent people with characters, so they can achieve a meaningful life in the hereafter.

There are four objectives of character spiritual counseling, first, the Meaning of Live, someone has to achieve a meaningful life, the relationship between humans and God and the relationship between human and human. Secondly, Intrinsic Value (internal value), the human is instinctively required for happiness and moral values that need to be considered. Third, Transcendence is the level of worship to Allah, and fourth, Community of Share Value and Support, every instinct that invites others to do good, because every person was given God’s attributes as a means to develop their character through education (spiritual counseling).

“This means, the effect of Society 5.0 era is getting harder. People become lazier; depression is increasing because they cannot follow the development of the Society 5.0 era. Thus, spiritual counseling to help and reduce spiritual crisis, practice mental and faith sensitivity to the healthy character and safe behavior. Spiritual Counselling is to manage a person’s future to have a meaning, both in life and afterlife,” stated Prof. Asrowi. Humas UNS
