UNS Clarifies One Student Positive COVID-19

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta provided clarification concerning one of the students who tested positive for COVID-19. The clarification was conveyed by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho accompanied by the Director of UNS Hospital, Prof. Hartono, Head of the UNS Hospital Medical Team, Prof. Reviono, and Spokesperson for UNS Hospital COVID-19 Taskforce, dr. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, Ph.D. in an online press conference, Friday (17/4/2020).

“Responding to the circulated news which came from the Chairman of Surakarta Task Force for the Acceleration of COVID-19 Handling concerning one UNS student tested positive for COVID-19, we clarify that it is true,” Prof. Jamal explained.

UNS has made an official report to the Head of Surakarta Health Department concerning the result of the PCR COVID-19 PCR examination in a patient with a positive result.

“Until now, patients are in good condition and treated according to the standards of the Ministry of Health. Last night I sent a WhatsApp message to the student, she replied and conveyed that she is in good condition, today is the 13th day she is treated in UNS Hospital. Then I send another message to her parents in Tebet, Jakarta, I asked them to stay calm and I conveyed that we will take care of their daughter with our best efforts,” Prof. Jamal stated.

Prof. Jamal added that regarding the COVID-19 prevention and control program, UNS has made a report according to the provision from the Surakarta Health Department. The further matter concerning the follow up to the results of epidemiological investigations is not the domain of the UNS.

Prof. Jamal Wiwoho added that the campus is proactive and positively support the COVID-19 Prevention and Control Program by being open and moving together. As a prevention effort, current UNS has implemented online learning to prevent the spread of COVID-19 since Solo was declared as KLB COVID-19. The visitors that will enter UNS must go through a body temperature check to anticipate the spread of COVID-19. Besides that, UNS academic staff work from home and take a turn to go to the office.

The Head of the UNS Hospital Medical Team, Prof. Reviono stated that the student who is tested positive lived in Solo (in the hostel). But she went back to Jakarta because her family member passed away and returned to Solo afterward. During her two days after arriving in Solo, she stayed in her hostel because she has a fever and nausea. She then went to the doctor on duty at UNS Hospital. After that, she got a swab test and prescribed the Ministry of Health’s standard anti-virus drug.

“So, she already understands (the procedure), thus, when she had the symptoms, she got a check-up immediately. This can minimize the spread of COVID-19. We continue to provide assistance, including a psychiatrist,” Prof. Reviono stated.

The Spokesperson for UNS Hospital COVID-19 Taskforce, dr. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, Ph.D., added that the student went to UNS Hospital on 4 April 2020. According to the Ministry of Health’s standard, the result of the swab test is released on 12 April and the result is positive.

“This is the 13th day the student is treated in UNS Hospital. After this we will conduct another test, hopefully, it will turn negative. According to the procedure, there are two other tests, if both are negative, then she will be allowed to go home,” conveyed dr. Tonang.

UNS asked all students who still live in Solo not to go to their hometown, especially to the area in the COVID-19 red zone. All UNS academic members who experience cough and fever above 38 Celsius are expected to report to the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni in each faculty. The Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni in each faculty will then have coordination with the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni and recommend an examination in UNS Hospital. Humas UNS
