Tips on Continuing Master Study by UNS Architecture Alumni

UNS – The Architectural Engineering Student Association (HMA) Vastu Vidya, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with the Architectural Engineering Alumni Association UNS (KARTUNS), organize an ‘Archi Talk #3’ entitled “Pursue a Master’s Degree?” on Saturday (20/6/2020). The event was held through the Zoom Meeting, with Hafidz Al Mubarok, an alumnus from UNS Architectural Engineering, serving as the moderator.
Two speakers were invited to the event, namely Rizki Aulia Nasution, an alumnus from UNS Architectural Engineering and Master’s Degree holder from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and the second speaker Avi Marlina, an alumnus from UNS Architectural Engineering who currently serving as the Head of Master in Architectural Engineering Study Program UNS.

This event is presented as a means to share the experience of the architectural engineering alumni. Many students are confused about their future after graduated. Should they choose to work or continue their study? Both speakers have experience in pursuing a Master’s degree and opinion on the options available after graduating the undergraduate degree.

Rizki Aulia Nasution or better known as Kiki shares her experience in pursuing a Master of Professional Studies in Real Estate at Cornell University. She was one of the recipients of the LPDP scholarship to pursue further study abroad. There are several things that should be prepared by a student. She added that the process to choose the study program and university is not an easy one.

“You need to know your objective in your study and taking the program. Because taking the wrong study program in an international university is not a simple thing, this can also affect your future after returning to Indonesia,” explains Kiki.

The second speaker, Avi Marlina, also mentioned a similar matter. She stressed that a clear objective is a must when someone is pursuing a Master’s degree. She further explains the matters from an educator’s point of view, mentioning that the undergraduate program is where the student to modify the theory and find a new theory. A Master’s degree is where the students juxtaposing theory with empirical proof and at the Doctoral level is the process of applying theory to design.

“When you are pursuing a Master’s degree and the next level, you should understand your mindset. Hopefully, it can be more structured,” expressed the Faculty member in FT UNS.

Aside from the starting mindset, Avi Marlina also suggested to the students who still confused with their expertise in Architectural engineering. Avi suggested to the students to take advantage of an internship and finding work first after graduating from university. This to find interest from students and further exploring their abilities.

This opinion is supported by some of the alumni who present during the discussion. Working is also considered to have the potential to open an opportunity to continue their study. As explained by the Moderator, there are several institutions or companies that allow or even require their employees to pursue further study. Humas UNS/Ratri/Dwi
