UNS – Management Program Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hold Family Business Webinar (Fabinar) on Advance Your Academic Career by Publishing a Family Business Teaching Cases with SAGE, Tuesday (23/06/2020), moderated by Dr. Sinto Sunaryo, and attended by 150 participants through Zoom Meeting. Two speakers were invited, Dr. Marleen Dieleman, Associate Professor of strategy and family business National University of Singapore and Rachel Taliaferro, editor of SAGE Business Cases. This event aims to provide motivation and tips and tricks in writing a teaching case.
Dr. Marleen stated that teaching case is an alternative to teaching methods at higher education. A teaching case is a long narration that includes one or more issues that require an alternative of settlements, using a structured method. “Teaching case is prepared as if students participate in solving the problems in the family business by providing several alternative solutions based on the theories and knowledge they have learned,” Dr. Marleen explained.
In Indonesia, there are several interesting topics in the family business, such as the sustainability of family business at the second and the following generations, the implementation of family values, and family business governance. The family business topic has its distinct challenges, such as the limitation of access and permissions to find the problems and firm’s reluctance to put their name in the written case.
Responding to this, Rachel Taliaferro provided alternatives in selecting topics besides a firm’s internal issues, by collecting data from the secondary sources and public sources or secondary case. Another challenge is language. Additionally, one of the family business case writers in SAGE from Indonesia, Fernita stated that the use of English in family business case writing requires serious attention and a proofread.
The attendee showed high enthusiasm through the numbers of questions submitted. Through this event, attendees are expected to be able to write a family business teaching case as a teaching method at higher education. Humas UNS/Ratri/Dwi
