UNS — As an effort to improve the quality and quantity of scientific publication as one of the performance indicators, the Center for Science and Technology of Higher Education (Pusat Unggulan Iptek Perguruan Tinggi – PUI PT)Center for Fintech and Banking (Fintech Center) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an online workshop by inviting editor-in-chief of two Q1 journals published by Elsevier, Prof. Brian Lucey from Trinity Business School, University of Dublin.
The event titled ‘Publishing Research Papers in Finance Journals’ was held through Zoom Meetings on Friday (23/10/2020). The event was attended by 221 participants from home and foreign institutions including from Malaysia, India, Nigeria, Thailand, Qatar, China, USA, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan. This event was opened by the Vice-Rector for Partnership and Planning Affairs UNS, Prof. Sajidan.
Prof. Brian Lucey, who is the editor-in-chief of International Journal of Financial Analysis and International Review of Economics and Finance, in his presentation explained on what does journal editor looking for in a manuscript and how an author can avoid rejection from international reputable journals. Several matters become the reasons for a journal editor to accept article manuscript from an author, among others, the interesting research idea, non-trivial research questions, theoretical contribution and the use of proper theory, following key literature, have appropriate use of grammar, extensive samples, using a new method, following recognizable formula, and do not contradict the major shakers.
To avoid rejections, Prof. Brian shared tips with the participants. Authors are suggested to ‘be clear’ by having only one idea in one paper and do not include too many ideas in one article. “Author should make sure that their study has a contribution to the theoretical development and is not just replacing variables. The article is expected to be grammatically correct or ‘be legible’,” Prof. Brian explained.
In the event held as a series of PUI PT Fintech Center UNS program, Prof. Brian reminded participants that authors can raise the current topic. However, as a researcher, they were encouraged to make sure that the topic has a long-term implication because research topics will continue to evolve.
The event that runs for three hours gained high enthusiasm from the participants. A participant from Universiti Utara Malaysia submitted a question on research scope that meet the criteria of an international journal. “If we see on the top tier journal, many publish local issues that are relevant to the global environment. Writing about a local topic (Malaysia) for Malaysia audience is for a local journal, but if we write a local topic that has an impact on the global audience, then use the global implication,” Prof. Brian stated.
