UNS — Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs (Vice-Dean I) FEB Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, S.E., M.Si., was inaugurated as a professor for her works in implementing Financial Inclusion for Indonesian Migrant Workers. Prof. Izza and the other five professors were inaugurated by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, on Tuesday (9/3/2021).
Prof. Izza was inaugurated as a Professor in Development Economics for her research and suggestion in implementing financial inclusion for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI). The study is based on the gap between the number of workforces and job availability in Indonesia, which poses a big problem. More than 5.1 million people are not absorbed into the working world. “This encouraged our people to work as migrant workers abroad,” Prof. Izza explained in her remark.
By working as migrant workers, they hope to improve their welfare at home. Each month, these migrant workers will send a portion of their income to their families at home. This money, dubbed as remittance, is mainly used for family consumption, education, acquiring assets, and home renovation in the home country. Only a few people utilized this remittance for productive business to increase future economic potential. Considering this issue, Prof. Izza suggested the implementation of financial inclusion in financial education and banking and economic empowerment for migrant workers.
Financial inclusion is expected to improve economic efficiency, support financial system stability, reduce shadow banking or irresponsible finance, support financial market deepening, and provide new potential for the banking industry.
This idea also supports the improvement of the Human Development Index (HDI), contributes positively toward the sustainable local and national economy, and reduces disparity and rigidity in the low-income trap so that Indonesian migrant workers can improve their welfare after completing their contract.
