The Mayor of Pontianak, Ir. Edi Rusdi Kamtono, starts the success story starting with his study time until his career as the City Mayor in Pontianak. The alumnus of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS recounts his impression while staying in Solo, including his story about the Soto Gading, which become his favorite food. “There are many beautiful impressions in Solo. This city becomes my second city and will always be a beautiful memory,” Ir. Edi reveals.

“Hopefully, UNS will always victorious and is useful for younger students. Keep improving the academic competency, spirit, and keep the sincere hardworking. Therefore, we as the alumni of UNS can be useful where ever we are, especially for our country Indonesia,” Ir. Edi explains.

The next success story comes from an alumnus from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS, namely Wahyu Kuncoro, who currently serving as the President Director of Perum Perhutani (t/n: Perum Perhutani is one of the SOEs in Indonesia focussing on forestry). He states that he enjoyed his study in UNS because it has mostly consisted of field practice, thus he often “traveled” and learned a lot at that time. He started his career in a private plantation company in Semarang. Afterward, he joined a selection in Finance Department in 1996. “Back then, it was so strange for me as an alumnus of Agriculture Faculty but got accepted in Finance Department. Every day I have to read financial reports. This experience can be a motivation for you, I think we do not need to be worried about our academic background. Because if we have a will, then we can do the job properly” Wahyu said.

From the academic sector, Kol. Dr. Yulianto Hadi, M.M., an alumnus from the Faculty of Sport (FKOR) who currently is the Headmaster of SMA Pradita Dirgantara, shares his wishes. “My hope for the young generation does not stop studying and developing skills. Your competency, improve your shortcoming. With continuous improvement you will be able to optimize your skill,” Dr. Yulianto hopes.

An equally interesting story comes from A. Tonny Trimarsanto, S.Sos., M.Sn., a movie director who is an alumnus of the Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP) UNS. Tonny states that life is a process to find a character, skills, and specialization. “One thing I learned during my study is that networking is important, knowing people is important. Meanwhile, academic knowledge, professionality, and skills are learned from experience,” Tonny reveals.

There are many other inspiring stories from all of the outstanding alumni who are attending the 48th Wedangan IKA UNS. Concluding the session, Elizabeth Sudira as the moderator delivers an important message from all speakers. Enthusiasm in learning new knowledge during study needs to be followed with the spirit to expand networks. To be a student is not only about studying but also about learning to live real life.
