UNS — The students delegate from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta successfully won the 3rd position in Universitas Jambi Law Fair II Constitution Debate after fighting 31 teams. The competition was held on 25-29 March 2021. The delegates from Debate Community Faculty of Law (KDFH) UNS were competing for Prof. Fuad Bafadhal, S.H., trophy.
Under the name of Muhammad Natsir Team, the members are Salwa Husna Sekai Suryawi (speaker 1), Nur Hidayah Handayani (speaker 2), and Nor Afita (speaker 3), Tri Cahyono as official, and Ragil Meiliana, Nvidia Febiola, and Fadhila Firdausi as research team. In an interview with uns.ac.id, Salwa stated that their team went through various internal selection stages to choose the delegates, intensive training for a month to dissect motion, speech training, sparring, brainstorming, and consultation. “The competition started from elimination stage when they competed three times to enter the best eight, best four, then semifinal, and the 3rd place round because (we) did not pass to the final stage for 1st and 2nd position,” Salwa explained on Tuesday (6/4/2021).
In the fight for 3rd position, they got a motion on “The Existence of Legality Principles in Indonesia” as a contra team. Salwa said that it was tricky to challenge the status quo of legal principles in Indonesia. In their defense, they focused on the judge’s verdict based on the community’s values because legal principles cannot match the community’s development. “Therefore, we suggest the implementation of social jurisprudence, improving APH, confirmation of the authority of judges, and so on,” the class of 2019 student explained.
Salwa mentioned that their key to success is optimism, teamwork, confidence in argument, and listening to other teams to find the weakness in their opinions. The team also needs to have one perception in every motion and standing position and understand the other speaker’s position. Speakers need to control their emotions and ready for any interruption. During the preparation, they maintain close consultation with FH faculty members, KDFH UNS alumni, and cross-program alumni related to the debating motion. This supervision dramatically helps them in formulating comprehensive and substantial arguments. Their research team also supports the formulation of arguments, brainstorming, and fixation before the debate.
Concluding the interview, Salwa shared her hopes for KDFH UNS which celebrates its 11th anniversary on 8 April. She hopes that KDFH UNS can continue to exist and facilitates her fellows and members to continue work together that shape more presentable students. “Maybe what we achieved now could not be achieved without the facility and people in (KDFH UNS). Thank you, KDFH UNS, KDFH UNS! Glory, Victory, Superior!” Salwa said. Humas UNS
