Guest Lecturer Series: Urban Management in Panama

Thomas E. Correa delivered material on “Urban Management in Panama”. The Faculty of Architecture and Design faculty member, Universidad de Panamá, explained that residential areas in Panama could be classified based on the community’s social condition. For example, rural housing, ingenious people housing, the abundant, affluent, rich, region of Panama, and the slum area. People daily life is closely related to their life quality and infrastructure development in Panama.

“There are high buildings, but problems of waste disposal, chaotic transportation, limited space for pedestrian, rural architectural heritage destruction, and parking problem still exist,” he explained. Currently, the provincial government and public sectors in Panama are looking for a solution to solve these problems with limited success.

Thomas E. Correa considers that future functions should be considered in planning development and arrangement of residential settlements. He reminded the participants of the importance of environmental, economics, and sustainability in the development and arrangement of residential settlements. Cities with better planning and function will bring us to the future we want. “When planned carefully, it offers opportunities for the current and future inhabitants,” he said Humas UNS
